If my original post seemed argumentative I apologize for that. Yes you are correct the actual locking noise is different. And this morning I thought about how my "girlfriend", seems odd to say at our ages, will lightly drag her hand across the door handle after opening. I have not heard it lock when she does but I could see it happening if she were to hesitate for a second on the top of the handle. Unfortunately this didn't occur to me to try last night during my experiment. When I first got my Maverick, day 2 of ownership, I had not read ALL of the manual and I heard the door lock while my hand was on the top of the handle. I knew about the unlock feature but had to unlock the door and get the manual out to read about the auto-lock area. Please let us know what you find. If the passenger door is indeed locking the driver's door on it's own without tactile input then a trip to the dealer would be in order.
THAT'S IT! Hallelujah! And thank you for your analytical skills.

I was able to replicate it by myself, even with the fob in my pocket, by deliberately squeezing the exterior passenger door handle just behind the opening (where your fingers normally go) as I grabbed it.

Then I had my wife come out and try to open the door a few times. It usually auto-locked, but not every time, as her hand was placed a bit differently each time. When we go out together, her usual routine is to open her car door, retrieve her sunglasses (we live in the Phoenix area, so sunglasses are a necessity year-round), close her car door, and get in the passenger side of the truck. Because her car sits further back in the garage than the truck does, she is approaching the passenger door from behind it rather than straight on from the side.

This now makes sense, and it also explains why this has never happened to me when I've been alone. I guess I habitually grab the driver's door handle straight-on.

I've never had a vehicle with this auto-lock "feature" (still an unnecessary part of the vehicle cost and maintenance in my opinion), so I had pretty much forgotten about it until you mentioned it.

The ongoing history of drivers accidentally hitting the "lock" lever has probably been a distraction here, but you are saying the driver's door is locking when your wife opens her passenger door?

Just a simple question. Have you watched her open her door? This scenario is either repeatable, or it isn't. And the only way for the passenger door to lock any other door is the power lock button on the passenger door. Is she hitting that? Apologies if you already commented on this in all the bickering above, but I think that is something I would want to rule out.
See my immediately previous response (MavStangVa solved the mystery). I do have to give you some credit. She was NOT hitting the door lock, but if I had been over on the passenger side watching her open her door as you suggested, I may have noticed the placement of her hand over the auto-lock ridges on the back half of the exterior lock.

Glad to help. And thank you for the update. Maybe, though I doubt it, someone will search in the future and find this information useful. I was new to the feature also and thought it was possessed when it locked the first time I put my hand on the top of the handel.

Lock & Unlock make the same sound on my 25.

However, Lock will briefly flash my front & rear blinkers - while Unlock will turn the blinkers and front/rear running lights on constantly.

Thanks & agree. I deleted my haunted and/or cat responses to make it simpler for “those who come after” to find the correct solution:)

One solution is. You could start opening the door for her.😉😉
My wife appreciates it, when I remember

Learn something every day. Few months ago, got out of truck, engine running, to dump a trapped animal. Open back door, reached in to pull latch.

Same happened 2 days ago. Engine running, cell phone inside.

Have keypad on door. Scribed pad code on truck part, as can’t always remember the code #. Only jssueis if nite, dark, can’t read code #.

Yeah. I see that many of us have the same issue. I mean, many of us didn't consider the actual physical locking/unlocking button/switch/lever. Honestly, I locked myself out within minutes of bringing it home. I had left my phone in the truck along with the key and the door was locked. Fortunately I still had the spare in my pocket.

Even after you guys showing me the issue, I was still looking at the placement of the electric buttons and not the lever. Now that I see the issue, that's all I can see. Pull the door handle to pop the latch and then push the door open with the same hand in one smooth motion and there it is. Pushing the door open forces the hand into the lock lever and locks it.

Calm down. You are talking about things I did NOT say - I did not say that I am "locked out". When my wife opens her door, we both hear the driver's door lock. Then, when I activate the proximity sensor by placing my fingers inside the exterior door handle, we both hear it unlock. Sometimes that takes a moment, but it unlocks.

My issue is that it locks in the first place. More unintended negative consequences of adding unnecessary electronics to a vehicle, jacking up both the purchase price and the future repair costs.
ETA - more than a day late but hopefully no dollar short. Never mind the below questions since this was noticed and pointed out by the ADL regulars. (Automatic Door Lock!)

People really want these features - that's why they are there. Some wish Ford did more, or less, with them though, from many posts where they compare with even other Ford models.

I'm curious if she can sit in passenger seat - hit the lock all button with you standing in position at rear door - and it sounds different?
Like - is it really only the driver's door locking, because it does sound louder when all locks are fired off.
Maybe you already had this compare done, and that's why you know it's just the driver door locking - it's just not as loud and from all over. Garage much better place for this since echo.

Now - that means the truck was left all doors unlocked?
No sound of her unlocking door because she hit the unlock door sensor on passenger side?
Seems to happen too quickly.

Why I'm curious about the sound of lock all being different.
She's not hitting the lock door sensor as she grabs handle, and happens to get her door open before they all lock?
That would be a timing issue.
If the handle lock sensor was touched, it means lock all even that door.
Though, it does sound like the pause should be on the unlock part, the lock part sound like it should be immediate - hence a timing issue if this is the reason.

USING KEYLESS ENTRY
Unlocking the Doors

With your passive key within 3 ft (1 m) of your vehicle, touch the unlock sensor on the back of the door handle for a brief period and then pull on the door handle to unlock, being careful not to touch the lock sensor at the same time or pull on the door handle too quickly. The intelligent access system requires a brief delay to authenticate your intelligent access key.

Locking the Doors

With your passive key within 3 ft (1 m) of your vehicle, touch the outer door handle lock sensor for approximately one second to lock, being careful not to touch the unlock sensor on the back of the door handle at the same time. After locking, you can immediately pull on the door handle to confirm locking occurred without inadvertently unlocking.

So far I have never locked the Maverick door by accident.
One of the hardest things I tried to do when I was making the video of the accidental locking.
Was the natural way I opened my door and not accidentally pushed the lock LEVER.
Today alone I got out of the truck eight times and cannot recall how I open the door and not push that lock lever. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Whereas I'm discovering the troubling habit of not always fob locking it as I walk away.
I used to have great habit of door locking Rav on exit.
But with fob lock being needed to arm alarm (maybe I need to test the door lock-all button, maybe manual is wrong).

Late last night heard noise possibly attic, possibly edge of roof - so went outside to look and listen.
Looked at truck and thought, I think we got out in a rush - did I lock it?
Door opened right up. Ugh.

I have never done this on either my Mav or 2 previous Escapes with the same layout.
