Long story short, took my truck to Ford and the technician said the modem has died. My vehicle is no longer under warranty so they quoted me $500 for the part and $250 for the install.

I told them to go ahead and order the part but I’m very on the fence about this. I only use the app for remote start, lock/unlock, and reminders for when I need to change the oil. For $750 I can probably live without those things.

Anyways, I can’t find record of anyone doing it themselves. Has anyone been successful? Does anyone have the part number handy? I’d like to know the cost buying direct from Ford.

I am also aware that I will likely have to have the dealership activate the modem once installed.

Thanks!

Can you give us the Year/Trim/Drivetrain?
If you PM me the VIN I can try to look up exactly what your AsBuilt has.

May be worth checking/reseating the fuse,

I believe it's fuse #11 for the telemetrics, in the passenger footwell.

Yep, tried all the tricks. It’s been declared dead. And the warranty expired only 2000 miles ago….strange timing…

Doesn't the dash display on the XL provide oil change reminders?

According to your AsBuilt data, the TCU assembly part number is NB5T-14G087-LB which can be replaced with service part number NB5Z-19K350-A.

Weirdly, I can't seem to find it using Ford's (public) parts search, even though it's usually been pretty reliable recently. It seems to match similar parts on eBay though, so not sure what to make of that.

Ford's parts site claims the NJ6Z-14G229-A mentioned above is an exact match for your VIN so I would go with that, this intrigues me though...

The fact that “1” is secondary and “2” is primary ought to get someone strung up by their scrotum. Incredibly bad engineering, documentation, and quality assurance. Just wow. :poop:

Engineered for the fastest and cheapest to build at the factory, repair is not high on the list of considerations.

Situations like this, really make me consider the extended warranty.
Yes exactly. At least the electronics…this is my first “new car” I’ve ever purchased and I guess I naively thought parts would last longer than 2.5 years. (I put a lot of miles on it). Also frustrating that it’s not a hard use part like a window motor.

Care to explain this to a non-engineer?

On eBay “NB5Z-19K350-A” shows 2018-2020 Expedition telematics unit. “NB5T-14G087-LB” shows 2023-2025 Transit telematics unit. Which would I buy if I wanted to try doing it myself?
