5g modem or phone hotspot

is there an advantage to the on-board 5g modem/hotspot compared to just using my 5g phone as a hotspot?

My understanding is AT&T service the onboard 5g for a flat $750 fee. Why would I need to do that?

You don't really. My 22 Mav cam with LTE, never paid to get it connected, since I have a phone.

Ford still uses the modem even if you don't pay, to connect the Ford Connected Services (Fordpass app). They also use the modem to collect vehicle information (used by Ford and Ford dealers), information about the owner (driving habits, info from any connected phones), which the sell to third parties like advertisers and insurance companies.

It does all that unless you pull fuse 11/12. Located at the front top of the passenger side footwell. Behind a plastic snap-on panel.

Not sure where you saw the $750 figure.
Looks like it's between $16 and $20 a month (12 month or 6 month,) $10 if you already have AT&T cell phones.
Or $25 for just a month.

Most cellular plans have a cap on hotspot data, usually 5 or 10gb. You'll eat through that quickly streaming video.

I suppose if you have children that might be using it a lot for streaming or you're vacationing a lot it might be useful. I don't see myself ever using it.

I guess one benefit would be increased range/signal strength but are they just using the stock antenna or something embedded in the roof unit ?

It's very likely there aren't a lot of changes to the system, you can check the fuse box list in the owners manual. All manufactures are doing this now, since they make as much or more money selling owner data than they do selling vehicles. Data is the really money maker in the modern era, no way they are going to give it up, without regulation.
