If you're operating the pedals and your leg hits the shifter you're sitting in the wrong seat.

So I have grown to like the dial shifter. Would like some sort of buttons on the dash. I get board and I had to teach myself it is not a fidget spinner at lights! Hence the desire for buttons! I have slammed this puppy into reverse and park at times. Albeit it while it was stopped.

Volkswagen GTI is a great manual-transmission option... my ex went through two in about 6 years due to "driving issues" 😑- I loved to drive them, but couldn't have as a daily driver due to my tendency to do questionable things just because the car was able to

That's what I've heard. My parents, my mom especially, HATED driving stick, but they were dealing with California hills and California traffic with their last manual cars. I love just outside of Salt Lake now where the traffic is quite mild by comparison . My main concern is breaking something. Frying a clutch, shredding gears on a transmission, etc. I don't know how badly you have to screw up when driving stick to cause that kind of damage, I'd imagine it varies from car to car.

My only experience with manuals first hand was a 70s Chevy blazer where the clutch was so heavy it was insane. But most modern cars should have a much lighter clutch than that beast.

I must say that I enjoy how I can pull in somewhere and just turn off the key. It goes into park all by itself. Yes, I know, very lazy of me. But, one less step to getting out of the vehicle.

A steering column stalk is absolutely the right place to put an automatic shifter. We only went to console automatic shifters because every guy driving a mommy automatic wanted to fantasize that he was driving a 1960s era muscle car.

I'm not a floor-shifter hater. I exclusively drove manual transmissions for 50 years. For a manual transmission, four (or five) on the floor is the way to go. Not so with an automatic that shifts via wire. I'd rather use that space for the Kleenex box, thank you very much.

I'm still wondering what all this extra space people are finding with a rotatory dial, are you able to float something in the air above it?
The added space that allows you to easily get stuff in/out of the storage area in front of the selector area. The Subaru I owned had this problem. Larger items I stored there were impossible to get in/out of the storage area without unlocking the shifter and moving the shifter from Park to Drive. Not a problem with the Maverick's dial shifter.

Exactly 👍 The dial style gear selector allows easier access to the cup holders.

I just received a 2024 Hybrid XLT. Pretty disappointed so far, but it's a company car/truck.
Being that I am 6'2 and move my legs, in doing so, I have hit the rotary dial at least 4 times while in cruise control knocking it into neutral or reverse.
I have read that someone installed an F-150 shifter. Are there any updates, pics, videos on this?
And would it work on a 2024?
I would love if the shifter was on the column.

My 2018 Polaris SlingShot with a 5 speed manual is my way to get a rush. I don't even have to go anyplace. Just put it in 1st, a little rev and dump the clutch. Back wheel lights up and off (I don't) go. Actually, it's a lot of fun in 2, 3 and 4 also. 5th is for cruising.

Stick is definitely more fun to drive, but it becomes a bit tedious in heavy traffic.
Maybe because I've driven stick a lot, and probably partly because most of my manual transmission vehicles had nice easy hydraulic clutches, I've never found that to be nearly the problem that everyone else seems to.

Yep, some heavy clutches back in the day. You are correct though, most newer cars are running hydraulic clutch, very easy with those! Don't worry about "grinding" a few gears, the manual transmissions are fairly well built, should be ok there. We had a saying, "grind them till they fit"!

Glad to hear it. As I posted in another reply, while it is true that once mastered manually shifting becomes almost automatic, with today's vehicle distractions, i.e., navigation screens, unlimited music selections, virtual AC/heat controls, phone holders, etc., can make for a very busy set of arms that in earlier times only had to concentrate on shifting the vehicle.

It's less cumbersome to reach into the storage trays, the charging pad (if equipped), drink holders and from time to time, fondle my wife's knee.
