that's great!

I bet you were actually sort of relieved that is was something sort of basic like this and not some intertwined wacky internal problem.
You are absolutely correct. I have had my truck since 11/03 (arrived on my birthday) and have loved driving and accessorizing it.

It had been flawless, until this happened and thinking it was a defect issue was pretty depressing.

Wow you didn't blame the problem on crappy thin soft wire from Ford. Good for you.
I live in the country and have had vehicles ravished by mice. Including two riding lawnmowers. I hate poisoning them but it turned out to be my only recourse.

In a way this is a defect though. A very well known issue of wire insulation that attracts varmints to eat the soy, and yet the manufacturers continue to give us this problem without placing a bittering agent in the chemical insulation formula.
I left a 1998 Ford Ranger in a field for a few years waiting to find time to rebuild it. When I finally pulled it in the barn to start, there were multiple mice and varmints nests all inside and thruout. I have removed the bed, tranny and engine. There is not one single wire with signs of chew marks. All wires are perfect.
Why don't we go back to the old formula until there is a better insulation formula?

This happened to my new VW a few years ago. It was covered by my car insurance under comprehension.
Happened to me, too, with my 2013 Tacoma. They somehow got to a wire/sensor inside the V of the V6 (nice warm spot, I suppose) and it required taking apart the entire top end of the motor to get in there and fix it all. It was about a $3,000 job and my insurance covered it.

@JBL14 I’ve where several of the manufacturers were sued over the issue several years ago, but I didn’t read anything about the consumer winning. I think someone posted a link earlier in the thread about.

I guess it came down to buyer beware.

How about a couple of cats? Put their food bowls near the truck and let the games begin!

Idea for future engineers if they are gonna put soy in the insulation may as well add a bunch of capsaicin too. Make those rodents reconsider their life decisions. I suppose that would pan out though because we have to protect the individual that might be working on some wiring and then need to rub their eye(s) as I doubt anyone is going to bother with PPE when dealing with wiring.
