Toyota has released a technical service bulletin (TSB) for 2007-12 Toyota Tundra pickups to address a condition where paint on the tailgate is bubbling and corroding. This is likely caused by water getting trapped in it. The TSB fixes this problem.

The T-SB-0219-12 is meant for 2007-12 Toyota Tundra showing “a condition where the paint at the bottom seam of the tailgate is bubbling and corrosion is present. In some cases this may be due to water being trapped in the tailgate, and not being able to drain properly,” according to Toyota.

I would venture a guess and advise everybody with a hole cover to remove it before taking it to a dealer for tailgate corrosion warranty repair.
Me? I'm gonna attach a rubber flap under the edge of the tailgate protector to keep debris out when the gate is down and hang open for ventilation when up.
Yes, I'll take it to the bank, those tailgate hole covers are stupid. I've washed out the bed many times with a hose. I wouldn't want anything covering those holes, it's ventilation.

I was thinking a piece of heavy mylar but the same effect. Plugging those vent holes doesn't seem like a preferred choice. Deflecting dirt and moisture would be better in my mind.

Just had to wash a bunch of dirt from the bed of the Maverick. Parked in the yard with a nice slope to rinse out the bed, put the tailgate down, and grabbed the hose. Got done and closed the tailgate... and watched several gallons of mud come out of the tailgate handle and Ford emblem.
WHATEVER YOU DO... DO NOT PUT THE TAILGATE DOWN TO WASH OUT THE BED!
That couldn't have done the lock, handle, camera, ect... any favors whatsoever.
Yep - learned that the hard way after hauling straw wattles. Straw washed into the tailgate holes. Fortunately I was able to vacuum out the straw, then bought the cover pieces mentioned.

I also bought a tube of 3M auto seam sealer and caulked the bed seams. Those seams trapped all manner of stuff. And it was disconcerting seeking the pavement under the trucklet through those seams. The caulk matches the black SIBL. Looks OEM now, the way it should have come from the factory.

Mylar - I contemplated just putting tape over the large holes too. It will work. There are other, smaller holes where moisture can drain but the big holes invite debris to collect. It is not like that area is highly exposed or gets stressed. But it is very good at allowing debris to enter the tailgate cavity when the tailgate is down.

Several gallons? There is a big hole on the bottom of the tail gate,I'm sure it got in that way. Cover with duct tape before hand should avoid this. Good to know though!

I had the hole covers printed and put them on when I replaced the tape on the tailgate gap cover. Got i from Evilbay and the tape lasted about a year before it started coming up.

I bought those covers from Etsy plus when I wash bed of truck, I keep the tailgate in half open position.

Or loop the tailgate cables over the top pins

Was it these holes mentioned here, maybe? This wasn't the thread I was looking for, but it's a good read.

https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/3d-printed-tailgate-hole-caps.38930/

I doubt these types of covers are watertight, but I can see how a water hose pointed right at the uncovered holes will turn an open tailgate into a fish tank...
I think a lot of people are mentioning this hole associated to OP's problem with water/mud passing through the handle and emblem attached to the tail gate.

I'm a little confused about it, how will mud go flow this hole (creeping from the bed top surface) which is on the bed side and then transfer to the tailgate handle and emblem? There has to be a hole in the tailgate for this to happen but this hole is on the bed side.......?

Lower your tailgate and look between the bed and tailgate bottom.
you will see 2 holes. 1 large rectangular hole and 1 smaller square hole.

when rinsing the bed or unloading rocks/dirt/hay/debris it will fall into the uncovered holes.

Or for $5 more you can get the original 1 piece cover made in USA (Texas) and has a maker that will respond to any issues you may encounter.
Be aware the $10 cover is just a Chinese Copy of the original. Still works, but just saying….
https://segarms.square.site

Oh, BTW The original is also available in a vented version that Mabett has not copied, yet....
What good is the segarms.square that is made in America if they don't even ship to Ohio?

Who says we don’t ship to Ohio? Did you try to order on your phone or iPad?

I have heard from a few people that said they couldn’t order but it has always been a phone or tablet issue with the square site.

I have shipped several to Ohio.
