Just had to wash a bunch of dirt from the bed of the Maverick. Parked in the yard with a nice slope to rinse out the bed, put the tailgate down, and grabbed the hose. Got done and closed the tailgate... and watched several gallons of mud come out of the tailgate handle and Ford emblem.
WHATEVER YOU DO... DO NOT PUT THE TAILGATE DOWN TO WASH OUT THE BED!
That couldn't have done the lock, handle, camera, ect... any favors whatsoever.

Was it these holes mentioned here, maybe? This wasn't the thread I was looking for, but it's a good read.

https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/3d-printed-tailgate-hole-caps.38930/

I doubt these types of covers are watertight, but I can see how a water hose pointed right at the uncovered holes will turn an open tailgate into a fish tank...
I bought the larger version that covered both holes. It fits tight, so no mud would get in there, and I've had no problems with it, or getting debris into the tailgate. You have about four small weep holes to let out any condensation or little bit of water, so this is a must have ;)

If it was mentioned I missed it and didn't see it in the search I did.
But bottom line, something everyone needs to know.
Just not sure if I want to remove the access panel for a few days and let things dry out.
I actually have a plan for a splash guard held on with 3M VHB tape similar to many of the window deflectors that just don't come off.
Will post photos after I do it!

Gotta buy those plugs. Currently have Gorilla duct tape covering those holes.

Did the same thing Monday, except I was washing out dog hair. I did a thorough spray out of the inside of the tailgate and let it dry in the closed position. Probably be smart to spray some oil in there or something.

Would lowering the tailgate to halfway position work?

Toyota has released a technical service bulletin (TSB) for 2007-12 Toyota Tundra pickups to address a condition where paint on the tailgate is bubbling and corroding. This is likely caused by water getting trapped in it. The TSB fixes this problem.

The T-SB-0219-12 is meant for 2007-12 Toyota Tundra showing “a condition where the paint at the bottom seam of the tailgate is bubbling and corrosion is present. In some cases this may be due to water being trapped in the tailgate, and not being able to drain properly,” according to Toyota.

I would venture a guess and advise everybody with a hole cover to remove it before taking it to a dealer for tailgate corrosion warranty repair.
Me? I'm gonna attach a rubber flap under the edge of the tailgate protector to keep debris out when the gate is down and hang open for ventilation when up.

Or for $5 more you can get the original 1 piece cover made in USA (Texas) and has a maker that will respond to any issues you may encounter.
Be aware the $10 cover is just a Chinese Copy of the original. Still works, but just saying….
https://segarms.square.site

Oh, BTW The original is also available in a vented version that Mabett has not copied, yet....

It doesn't even take a hose. I sometimes leave my tailgate open in the rain and it will fill up a good amount depending on how hard it is raining. I know it happens, so I expect it though.

The Mabett cover makes no allowance if you have spray-in bedliner that has been applied to the bottom of the tailgate. That cover only works when the bottom edge has paint only.

I bought the Mabett cover and it didn't work out on my Maverick with a Linex spray-in bedliner. If you try to force it on, you'll break the mounting tabs because they are very rigid.
