It's the "I went to pass someone and my engine died" threads that would worry me. Seems these come up more (only?) for hybrids. Could be a first year issue, but they seem to pop up every few days. It's one thing to have a vehicle that'll need work. But another that I can't trust it to go when I step on the gas. This issue wouldn't happen to me more than once...
I have it on good authority that all such posts have been traced back to certain high level GM employees. GM has had some difficulties lately.

GM recalls all Chevrolet Bolt electric cars over fire risk (nbcnews.com)

At least the Hybrid Maverick won't burn your house down.

So I am curious, and this may kick a hornet's nest. But it qualitatively speaking it seems like there are more issues with the hybrids than the ecoboosts. Its to the point where I find myself reading posts and saying "thank goodness I didn't order a hybrid". But this could also be selective memory based upon the fact I did order an ecoboost. So is it just me, or are there way more issues with the hybrids than the ecoboosts? Is it to the point where one would say getting a hybrid is a problem vehicle?

Thoughts?
Absolut

I absolutely love my Maverick hybrid. I have over 10,000 miles on it with zero issues! I would highly recommend it. Averaging 48mpg!

According to a Ford Technical Service Bulletin dated June of this year, Ford acknowledges that some of their models with the 4-cylinder 2.0 L EcoBoost engine are experiencing a common problem of coolant escaping into the cylinders manifesting as white smoke, engine misfiring, loss of coolant and will need engine replacement.

I have two family members that own a 2.0 Ecoboost Fusion and both, yes both need engine replacement. One with just 61k. The other is a year newer but I don't know the mileage. Bottom line is, the Hybrid system has an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty so to be fair, you have to consider $6,000 out-of-pocket if you're one of the unlucky ones with a Ford 2.0 Ecoboost out of warranty. Unless, of coarse, the class action law suit against Ford is successful.

I have never owned a hybrid until I ordered the 2022 Maverick, and although I love the mileage (42-44 avg mpg) and the looks and feel of the truck itself, The problems it's had ranged from a nuisance (slow speed braking, deep sleep battery) to downright safety issue (truck shuts down while driving/high voltage battery warning). Ford has a serious quality issue right now, so based on my first experience with my hybrid Maverick, I would not buy another one.

The Maverick ecoboost 2.0L was not included in those TSB's (yes there were quite a few of them) which required either an engine replacement or a long block replacement. IIRC, the 2.0L eco underwent an upgrade in 2019 that took care of the coolant leaking into the cylinders problem long before Mavericks were being built. I'm 100% sure the Maverick 2.0L ecoboost engine does not have this problem. It was discussed more in this thread: https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/2-0-ecoboost-motor-coolant-in-cylinder-issue.18364/

Thanks, I'm glad to hear Ford finally addressed that problem after a decade and hopefully this includes the Cleveland Engine Plant that now is also making some of the 2.0 EB engines for the Maverick. I'm still comfortable with ordering the Hybrid version because it has a stout warranty. Especially with Ford's history for correcting major problems.

My only problem with a Tacoma, is it is bigger than I want or need. I had a similar sized Ridgeline, and didn't like the size, which I'm sure wouldn't bother many of you.

I agree with ya, the Taco would primarily be a commuter vehicle with occasional road trips, so it'd be bigger than what I need as well. TBH, I really don't NEED a Mav either, I'm mostly a "go to work, come home, repeat 5-6 days a week" kinda guy. There's a few vehicles I could buy that would fit my needs in that area, but most of them are....boring (no offense to anyone who owns one of those vehicles). But if I'm thinking long term ownership of vehicles that would excite, have multiple uses, and/or be interesting, vehicles like the Taco and Mav are at the top of the list...

Maverick Hybrid late May build. Love it...no issues. Think the early build issues have been dealt with.

It seems most of the hybrid specific issues were a bad wiring harness, which has been fixed since then. Ecoboost will undoubtedly have more issues over a 5-10 year span. I know my wife's 2.0 EB Escape had its fair share.

My Lariat Hybrid February 22 build with 8K miles is currently at dealer after l faced sudden loss of power while driving. Didn’t face any other issues so far. But this loss of power issue is real and dangerous. Ford should do a safety recall for this. Overall I am happy with my truck it’s just that Ford shouldn’t ignore any safety related issues and proactively address those. A/C losing power vs car losing power are two different things.

OK, lets compare, the Hybrid has all the following the EB does not have:
  1. Five electronic control modules the EB does not have https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...im-levels-and-options-found-by-forscan.11122/
  2. Two 3-phase high performance electric motors
  3. Two 3-phase high voltage motor drive electronics
  4. 400 VDC battery
  5. 400 VDC BMS (battery management system)
  6. 400 VDC to 12 VDC power converter
  7. Completely separate electronics/battery water cooling/heating system with multiple heat exchangers and circulation pump
  8. 400 VDC wiring harness
  9. 400 VDC contactor to safely disconnect high voltage on shutdown
  10. Electric motor driven A/C compressor since the engine may not be running
  11. Electric vacuum pump for brakes since it can't count on engine vacuum.
  12. Passenger compartment electric resistance heaters.
Now list all the parts the EB has that the hybrid doesn't, and be sure to include the trans contents. The list will be 5 times longer.

Ford has made hybrids for a long time.

Disclosure: I have driven a 2016 CMax Hybrid for 30k miles without any problems and with high mpgs.

I think they will work out any problems. Therefore, I will continue to wait for my Mav hybrid. I believe in the technology.

I am not employed by Ford or one of its dealers.

More physical parts is literally always a greater chance of failure.
You are forgetting the reliability of the individual parts.

One gizmo has 10 parts, 9 of them virtually never fail, one fails 5% of the time.

The second gizmo has 8 parts. One part fails 10% of the time.

I'll take the first one, thanks.

I drive a CMAX for work with 60k miles on it, has been an absolutely flawless performer, which helped tip me toward a hybrid Mav. Regardless of the first year wiring harness woes. I'm gonna keep a jumpbox in my Mav, if I ever get it, just in case, but I won't be at all surprised to never use it.

In the meantime, I also totally endorse a mass number of people cancelling their hybrid orders. Please do so quickly, I need my hybrid scheduled. 😆
