I don't think "self charging EV" really fits, Technically yes the motor charges the battery, but it also drives the vehicle, so it's not a true EV.
IMHO
Yes, very true. An advantage to having a Hybrid with a fueled recharging engine is that the engine just needs to run at idle and its maximum efficiency sweet spot. The Maverick Hybrid is labeled correctly, I see my C-Max's electric motor as a power booster as much as a fuel economy aid.
We had a 2012  Prius and I hated the way people would drive so aggressively around me.
Didn't matter if I was 10 mph over the speed limit or 100 mph in a 70. Our C-Max has been much better in this regard, the Maverick should be even better yet, not attracting so many aggressive drivers.
If the owner chooses their Maverick to properly meet their needs, I don't really see the argument between EB and Hybrid.;) Now if the Hybrid were offered in AWD that would muddy the waters a little bit, I think.

Hybrid is fine, as it combined the use of battery-assist with the combustion engine. Toyota and Honda got it right by aptly referring to first insight and prius as hybrids.

Yeah, there are other vehicles out there these days (fuel cell/hydrogen, combustion hydrogen, battery-electric, other fuel cell-electric, plug-in hybrid, flex-fuel), but most vehicles badged as hybrids are simply that which was well defined and establish decades ago with the insight and prius.

That's odd. I don't have a subscription and it opened fine for me. . . I'm using Firefox as a browser, if it matters. . . .
The first paragraph is readable, after that it's blurred out unless you have an account.

EAV (electric assisted vehicle)
or
ETV (electrified transmission vehicle)

I agree with the gist, though. Calling both PHEV and HEV hybrid is confusing. My dad asked me, regarding my Maverick, where I plug it in.
🤔Doesn't "Hybrid" just signify that it has both an electric drive motor AND a gasoline engine, and require additional wordage to describe how, if at all, they interact and therefore maybe we could refer to maverick as a NPHEV (NonPluginHybridElectricVehicle).

General public is confused. Auto manufacturers are going to use this to their advantage. Ford lumps hybrid vehicles into the "Electrified" segment on web page with pure EV.

Smart marketing.

Well my question has always been if you can charge a regular battery in a vehicle and you can charge a hybrid battery in a hybrid vehicle WHY CAN YOU NOT 100% CHARGE A FULLY ELECTRIC VEHICLE THE SAME WAY THEY DO IT WITH WIND , SOLAR AND HYDROELECTRIC ALL THREE MAKE ELECTRICITY. A vehicle has the mean generate, alternate or solar panels charge the vehicles battery. Think about it 🤔

I placed this in the Hybrid sub-section of the MTC forums as I'm trying to avoid another Hybrid vs Ecoboost pissing-match thread. This thread is directed toward those that already feel the gas/battery powertrain is the better choice for their normal driving circumstances. And its meant to be read in a tongue-in-cheek yet thought-provoking manner.

The linked article's title is polarizing, but it discusses how the term "Hybrid" may not be the best descriptor and even includes how Toyota Prius history maybe hurting current Hybrid acceptance (slow drivers always holding up traffic, etc).

I sort of like thinking of my future Mavericka as actually a "Self-Charging EV". Of course Ford (and other manufacturers) won't adopt the new term because "Hybrid" is ingrained in current automotive culture...and especially becuase the badges would be longer and therefore slightly more expensive 😉.

Isn't the one chevy a self charging EV. I think its the volt? Were it uses gas engine to charge battery and battery powers electric drive motors to move car.

I wish they'd build solar panels into the roof and or bed covers it etc.

Even the Volt wasn't a full-time series hybrid. There were regimes where the engine was mechanically connected to the wheels. The Honda Accord as well. Closest is the BMW i3 with its range extender or Nissan has a few series hybrid drivetrain models in Japan.

Solar panels on a hybrid are more of a novelty. There isn't enough space, efficiency, and sunlight is too variable to provide meaningful charge for the cost. Hyundai has some that can be optioned for it and, at its most optimal, are good for less than a mile of range per day. At best it can offset the power needed for A/C which is something. Or on some Prius models Toyota had it to run a cabin ventilation fan when parked.

I kind of like the idea of a Maverick hybrid dragging around a hydroelectic dam.

That shows real power...
