I’ve put a bit over 30,000 miles on my 2022 AWD EcoBoost, equipped with the tow package, and it’s proven to be a fantastic choice. The 2.0 engine delivers impressive power in every situation, handling even near the 4,000 lb towing limit with ease. Remarkably, fuel economy has been excellent, which has been a great bonus. I maintain a strict service schedule, never exceeding 5,000 miles between oil changes. Instead of Ford’s recommended synthetic blend, I’ve consistently used Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 for added engine protection.

Oh, there's a learning curve. Prior to my Maverick (which I just got on Monday), I've exclusively owned RWD V8 vehicles. There's definitely a different feel to power delivery with this engine. It is nowhere near as smooth in acceleration as my V8s (but the power is definitely adequate). It's going to take some getting used to, and I'll have to explore the different modes as well. So far (I've barely driven 50 miles) I've only used "Normal."
I have driven every type of ice engine and I’ve never felt they have a learning curve at all. Maybe the overall drivetrain sure but no way for normal driving is there a curve.

If there is a Thread about this already, sorry.

A lot of the you are driving the Maverick with the 2.0 EcoBoost engine. And I would like to get some information/insite on how this engine runs. What to expect from it. Will it get out of the way if the driver needs to get going right now?

Example, the entrance ramps to X-way are fairly long here where I live. I do not do 35 mph until I get in the #1 lane and then get up to speed. I get up to 70 mph plus before I get halfway down the ‘get on’ ramp to match traffic. My Dodge 3.5 v6 does a good job of doing that. But will this 2.0 EcoBoost engine be able to do the same??

Has anyone had engine problems? This story at www.dailydot.com, ‘Ford Escape’: Mechanic issues warning on any car with an EcoBoost engine. Here’s why, https://www.dailydot.com/news/ecoboost-engine-car-warning/
The article is about where coolant leaks into the engine cylinder. Coolant infusion, especially in these engines.

Now let's go the other direction, I am coming up to my ‘get off’ ramp, it is fairly long, and the v6 will slow the van down a good amount before I need to apply brakes. I do not come up to a STOP sign/light and slam on the brakes like I have seen other driver do. Sometimes I will down shift to the next gear. Will the Maverick let me do this?

Thanks
Heck the Mav hybrid is as quick as your current minivan (isn't that a 3.6L also?). The 2.0 Mav will be faster.

On the other hand, if someone couldn't merge into traffic with an older Prius that goes 0-60 in 10 sec - it's on the driver, IMO. Any modern day vehicle is plenty fast. I think that the people that fail at this just don't know how to "floor it" - sounds like you'll be fine with either Mav engine.

My 2.0 has plenty of power maybe more on mine since I have the 4k tow package and that gives you a lower dif ratio for even more power. 0 to 60 in under 6 seconds if not loaded down. I have 23k miles on my 23 and 5k oil changes and no problems so far.

Well my two cents...

I hate turbo'd gas 4 bangers. Too much boost not enought strength in the block and heads for the most part.

The Ecoboost engines are plagued with carbon deposits on the intake valves are a result of the direct injection system.

There are systems in use to blast those deposits off the valves using a walnut shell blaster.

I'm going to try to use a carbon cleaner injected into the intake every 5k or so...not sure how I'm going to handle that right now.

And the other issue on these engines is have the oil pump running on a belt inside the oil pan. Whoever designed this should be shot.

Those belts break down in the oil and chunks of rubber get sucked into the oil pump pickup resulting in engine seizure from lack of oil.

Great design...not.

If my Maverick hits 75K I'll change that belt before it blows up!

unsurprisingly there are plenty of old school, ill-informed and outdated opinions. even amongst those who own ecoboost mavericks, lol.

I didn't bother reading the first article. the first rule of clickbait is you don't click the bait and give them ad views.

most of the engines that mechanics whine about were improperly maintained and/or driven after they developed issues that should have been corrected before they were fatal. (if you're at all curious about some of the worst vehicles, I highly recommend finding and following 'Just Rolled In' on FB or Instagram. holy crap people are dumb.)

some mechanics have YT channels and this drives clickbait posts seeking that ad revenue. 🤷‍♂️
____

on to the Maverick ecoboost.

Ford has been doing modern turbocharged engines a long time now and has made significant improvements in every generation. the MY25 Maverick ecoboost 2.0 is changing again, and technically we can't know how that is going to be long-term for several years to come (even though the MY24 escape has this engine). it has direct and port fuel injection, and it has revised coolant jackets.

but I would bet that Ford did not screw up the redesign, considering they know exactly what went wrong long-term with the original closed-deck 2.0 ecoboost, the first gen open deck, the move to twin scroll turbo, and so on. they know a lot more than any of the armchair quarterbacks here, including me.

I've had 4 turbocharged four cylinders and the ecoboost is really good. (the stock transmission behavior isn't great, but you can tune it.) my least favorite is the only one that failed on me, despite only ever using premium gas when it, like the Maverick, officially supports 87 octane: 2017 Mazda 2.5 turbo. that was truly a first-year turbo, but Mazda at least did get it replaced in relatively timely fashion, about 3 weeks and I had a free loaner car. (edit: I seriously never bothered to go look, but I just thought of it and it looks like a cracked cylinder head is not uncommon. I never heard that official diagnosis on mine, but definitely was leaking coolant from the head gasket area, and they replaced the entire engine.)

I can say all this with utter confidence because I bought my Maverick ecoboost from Don Hattan Ford in Augusta, KS and they offer a free lifetime powertrain warranty on new Fords. so, with 45k miles in 26 months of ownership, I am not afraid of putting the years and miles on my turbocharged Maverick. :)

Sounds to me just like the nylon clad aluminum timing gears Ford used in the '60s and '70s. Small splinters from a failing gear would enter the oil pump, lock it up and then no oil pressure. Same thing, different era.

You are addressing an issue that is not about lag. Turbos are so fast to spool already. You are experiencing the ford tuning. They limit trq per gear as to not destroy the drivetrain.
No. Off idle they always increase lag. Some of the power has to get diverted to spool up the turbo. Are you telling me that my lived experience is somehow wrong? Particularly when I have other non turbo vehicles that do no experience that lag.

Ford has certainly tuned things so as not to overstress the transmission but there is no need to do so at low rpms. The curves clearly show the torque is no where near the limits for the trans in that range. A turbo I-4 simply does not produce much power at the low end - they shine when it revs up. Everything is a trade off.

Why is this fact so hard for people to grasp?

The Maverick has plenty of power. You will have no problem doing this.

The older Ecoboost had less head gasket area between the coolant passage way and the cylinders in the area between the cylinders. But the newer ones have a closed deck between the cylinders, Ford drilled a hole in the block for coolant not cutting a line in the deck. This change happened a few years before the maverick went in to production. so not a problem.

In the past this was a no, as the Maverick did not have paddle shifters. There was the low gear button that can kinda do this but I have not been happy with the results. For 2025 the Termor and the Lobo get paddle shifters. I have a older Termor now, this added feature is almost getting me to upgrade but I dont drive the truck everyday and my wife does not care about this.

If your driving in a hilly area and want low gear to slowdown, tow/hall mode works well, push the brake pedal twice and the truck down shifts.

Overall my Maverick and been great, nothing has broken and I have had no problems. It is very comfortable and gets good MPG.

If you put it in sport or tow mode, it is very responsive. Otherwise, the computers are seemingly tuned for fuel economy. Even in normal it lags a bit when accelerating, which is even more pronounced in Eco and Slippery mode.

Source: my observations.

When you say van and dodge 3.5 V6, is it safe to assume you have a 2004-2010 Pacifica van with the SOHC 3.5 engine? That engine makes 250 hp at 6,500 rpm and 250 lb ft torque at 4,400 rpm.

With the ecoboost, you have about a second of turbo lag, but once the turbo is spun up, it makes 277 lb/ft of torque at 3,000 rpm and 250 hp at 5,500 rpm. The result is that you get more torque down low and you don’t have to rev it nearly as high to get the amount of desired power.

Then, when you compare the power to weight ratio of the 3,800 lb Maverick to the 4,400 lb Pacifica, the Maverick is going to be objectively faster in every metric and that low rpm torque is going to make it feel a lot peppier than the Pacifica.

On your question about deceleration, a 2.0 liter engine will have less engine braking than a 3.5. And you do not get full manual control over the Maverick transmission, so you can’t pick downshifts. But there is an “L” button for “low” on the shifter. That will attempt to get you into low gear and hold you in low gear until you turn it off. It is not super aggressive in its downshifting, it it will give you 5-6 downshifts on a typical off ramp.
