I canceled my slate order the day I ordered my Maverick.
If they had stuck to their original promise there would already be a Slate in my garage. Instead, price went up, delay after delay, and after seeing one in person poor quality.

Whether you plan on getting one or not, an attempt at a small reasonably priced ev truck is good for everyone, even if this one fails.

I'm not in a rush to be an early adopter for something as important or expensive as a vehicle from yet another techbro company, but I wish it success, even if it helps the next company rise from the ashes of Slate's pilfered corpse.

Which promise?

Remember the ‘Yugo’ ?
Little shit box Russian looking puddle jumper.
Buddy bought one for $100 right after the company failed.

He couldn’t even get brake pads.
It was an Italian design by Fiat (the people who make RAM trucks) who were famous for reusing parts. The same pads and rotors would fit everything from a '67 124 to a '82 131/Brava and the 127 which was used as the basis for the Yugo. Not Russian, but Yugoslavian. If your friend couldn't find brake pads, he didn't know where to look:

Well given he bought it in 1992, per the original quote, woulda been kinda hard to get parts from the far future of 2026 when you can conveniently look up these things.

Back then the Yugo was an enigma. Yes it was licensed from Fiat but it was manufactured in Yugoslavia and had their own parts used. If you knew someone who knew Fiats you could make the switch but.....who, exactly, in the US knew Fiats that well? Fiats were more alien then Yugos outside a select few city areas.

In 99% of the country, you were SOL finding parts, nobody knew anything about them. That's part of why they are so hard to find today.

for those interested in what James May has to say about the Slate while driving around....Ft. Worth...Austin?

In-n-Out in Texas still seems odd to me.

$34,000+ for a yellow "truck" with running boards that aren't necessary? 😆 no thanks! Still loving my Maverick. Which coincidentally was near the same price with soo much more 🤷‍♂️ if I want to manually roll down windows I'll take my Camaro out 😎

Mr May was surprised & impressed by the “one foot” driving. The accelerator pedal acting as a brake also (regenerative). The brake pedal only needed for “emergency” stops.

Won’t be long before I’m following a Slate on the road - and I’m curious how the taillights will activate. It is somewhat frustrating to follow someone who “rides the brakes” with taillights constantly off & on. And dangerous to follow someone who slows down quickly without taillights.

Hopefully the Slate will strike a balance!
