I have seen several posts saying that the Ford Focus 2.0 is the same engine as the ecoboost 2.0. It is NOT. The Focus 2.0 was a Mazda engine (I owned one). The ecoboost is a completely different Ford engine!

and after the debacle with the idiotic design Ford did when they took the reigns caused tons of issues with coolant leaking into the cylinders.

heres hoping they got the 2019+ version right

That was the 2.3 motor Mustang /Rs, not a desgn fault, installing wrong head gaskets on wrong motors

That isn't what he is referring to. He is refering to the coolant slots they cut in-between the cylinders for coolant transfer. Those caused coolant intrusion on 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.3 eco motors. The head gasket deal was totally separate.

Yes tons of failures on those eco boosts. Head gasket failures. My daughters 2017 escape hydro locked and coughed up a motor at 50000 miles. Warranted with a new design long block from 2020 fusion. Yes definitely a design failure. At least it was covered under 5/60 power train warranty. Fordtechmakeuloco has a video explaining what goes wrong on these years

The original post is pretty old but technically it was used in the second gen focus prior, then it was known as the duratec 2.0. That motor was the result of a collaboration with Mazda (which is why it was so good) and then when Ford debuted the 2.0 Ecoboost it was based on that 2.0 duratec I believe with their own cylinder head. That Ford designed cylinder head has been the source of the majority of problems with the 2.0 Ecoboost but I believe they finally have it sorted with the version that's in the Maverick. I believe whoever made that comment was referencing the 2.0 duratec which actually has a ton in common with the 2.0 Ecoboost

I had a Focus with the older 2.0 that I traded in after two years (26K miles). The guy that bought it after I did had the dual clutch tranny go in it a couple months later and it sat on a lift at the dealers for over six months. They then got it off the rack and rolled it into a corner where it sat for another five months before Ford bought it back. Dodged a bullet on that one.

That's too bad, @SLJ. I have a 2012 SE Sport with the MTX-75 manual transmission that has been the best car I've ever owned. It's still a joy to own and drive at 150,000 miles. The only non-wear item I've replaced on it is the radiator (damn racoon!). So many people missed out on a great car when they equipped it with the DCT.

Not true. The Focus 2.0 is an engine inherited from the Ford/Mazda collaboration, and the only significant differences since then have been 3 minor head redesigns by Ford and not Mazda, and the use of a higher torque dual-scroll turbo instead of the single-scroll that had higher hp at the redline that was used up to about 2015. All of them were named Duratec 2.0 engines when used in Fords, but the block and everything else are almost unchanged from the Mazda parent. The Mav has the last of these with the VVT mechanism, and the previous two were primarily used on Fusions. The version with additional cooling ports around the head was poorly designed, and failed pretty often. Theere was a 1.6L version used on Escapes and a couple of other vehicles for two years, that was replaced with the 1.5L 3-cylinder. There was also a different 1.6L variant sold in Europe that had a rubber belt to run the oil pump, that failed a lot and was never sold in North America.

I know this is late but let me air in here for a moment.
One, Ford and Mazda had a collaboration on the 2.0L and the 2.3L motors in both Mazda and Ford vehicles for a period of time.
Two. I had a 2012 Focus SEL Hatchback with that dual clutch transmission. I got 335,000 miles out of the factory transmission before the engine started to go. If you drive a DCT like a manual, it will last forever. Think of the brake pedal like a combination clutch/brake pedal on a farm tractor. When you let off the clutch on a hill, it rolls a bit, and if you are in slow moving traffic, it's going to shudder from the constant low speed moving. I had a full straight pipe with an intake and a tune on my old Focus.
Three. The EB variant in the Mavericks have fixed the oil problems with the caking and turbo leaks. Just make sure to check your oil like in any vehicle, and get it changed as needed. Also only use recommended oil and filter. I use Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend since I change my oil every 3 months and live in the only state that can have all four seasons in one day.

My wife had a 2013 focus. Great car. You needed to start off and floor it to 60 every couple months to keep the clutches aligned. Then it ran fine. I worked at a ford dealer in 2015 when the recalls started, we had clutches stacked 10 high along an entire wall… it was not an easy repair either. My wife’s focus did fine until 94,000 and then she got a new clutch under warranty. Sold a few years later and got a fusion energi.

A 2.0 Ltr Focus decided to do a red light race with my 2024 Eco Mav. It’s a lot lighter than my Lariat so he pulled a half a car length on me at the launch.
After that I walked away from him. The race ended at about 60 mph. I had ten car length on him.
It was plenty safe, the only other cars were behind us.
When I eased off the go juice at 60 he kept mashing it. I think he eased out at 75 or 80.
It was funny, his pride would not let him let me catch up to him.
His maneuvers in traffic told me his pride was severely injured. His loud exhaust did not do a thing for him.

I think what made my Mav quicker was my eight speed tranny keeping me in the sweet spot in the power curve.
My tach bounced between 4,000 and just over 5,000 rpm. Mine shifted out of first at 5,500
My tranny was so smooth, like nothing I’ve ever felt.
His five speed ratios were not as tight as mine in 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th.

Hey, It’s a good way to keep the pistons carbon free right ! I think taking my Eco from zero to 95 mph briskly once or twice a month is good for it.
All I know for sure is this is the smoothest, quietest, most powerful 4 banger I’ve ever had.
It truly feels as strong as the V-8’s of the seventies and eighties.

I know a lot of that is the eight speed but still, as a complete package, well I’m an Ecobooster till gas crosses six bucks a gallon.

I was hoping the 2.0T in the Maverick was a bigger version of the 1.6 in my 2015 & 2019 Fiesta ST's. It ain't.
