If you have "waste heat" like on the highway, towing, going up hills, there is no penalty to use heat inside after the first few minutes of engine on time (but still a penalty until the engine gets above 120 degrees F).

In stop n go / gentle driving / lots of EV driving there is often zero waste heat available. You'll be burning EXTRA gas just to make heat for your comfort.

Which is fine. It'll be 10 cents here, 10 cents there, and 5 mpg here and 5 mpg there.

I'm opposite. I avoid heater use like the plague. Just yesterday in 60 degree ambient in hellish gridlock my engine came on just to keep it over 120 degrees while standing still.

Heater use will cool your engine like 20 degrees per minute, if in EV. Drop to under 120°F and you are burning more gas. It's considered zero available heat at 120°F.

I'll drive an hour and my front shutters will never open, and this is San Francisco, not Fargo. 😄

OK had to get gas today, as some of my rewards points were going to expire, I went 762 miles and 59 MTE, so roughly 820 miles. When I filled up the MTE went to 818. 57.2 MPG all city driving, my commute is 17 miles one way.

So I hit over 800 miles on one tank for the 1st time, and probably the last time unless I have a backup fuel tank with me.

812.2.jpg

I hit the "0 Mi to E" at 745 miles. From this point I set my Trip 2 to record the mileage after the gauge said I hit 0.

0 Miles to E.jpg

I usually fill up when I hit or are close to the system's estimate of zero miles left. In those cases my fill up would be anywhere between 13.7-14.1 gallons. After seeing a post of someone filling up to 16 gal I thought I would push my luck. I did have a 1 gal back up gas container after I hit zero, but will not plan to do this often. Unless you usually have a rack with backup fuel container just fill up. Not worth pushing it especially since you dont know what driving style you will use for those las 2-2.5 gallons. I made it to 67 miles past 0 so I assumed that I was at bout 15 gal used. I did my usual three clicks at the pump and I assumed wrong.

Trip 2 Data.jpg

I used 14.8 gal witch came out to 54.8 MPG on this tank (best ever was 55.7 mpg). I did take the freeways more than I thought I would and I also did a long drive from San Jose to Manteca during rush hour with an accident, about 60 miles one-way 120 roundtrip. On the way back I was not in traffic, so if someone in the central valley has a Maverick and they drive both ways on HY 680 and HY 580 what kind of MPGs and MPT are you getting?

Fill-up Pump.jpg

If the tank does actually hold 16.5 gal as on post suggested, the it could be possible to hit 900 miles on one tank, but I wont be trying that anytime soon. I might but not unless the conditions are right and I have time to get out on the side of the road with a filled backup tank.
There are some things you are writing that I don’t understand. First what model Maverick do you have and which model year is it?
My hybrid according to the manual has a 13.5 gallon tank you say yours is holds 16.5 gallons. From what I read in the manual the 2.0 engine has the larger gas tank.
I have hit as high as 55 mpg driving say 20 miles of combine electric/gas miles. I have never hit that kind of milage for a full tank of gas.
So tell me more about your truck. Did you put one of chips in to enhance the performance?

What mode are you guys driving in? Just got mine and got a little over 600 miles on the first tank. Normal mode. Filled up 14.3 gallons and it said I had 7 miles until empty.

ALL Hybrid have a physical tank size of 16.x gallons.
What we have learned is: 13.8 is what the computer uses to base your MTE Miles To Empty on.

But there's 2 or 2.5 gallons of liquid in the tank after this. Can the suction line reach all of it? Maybe yes, maybe no.
But you have SIGNIFICANT fuel left after the truck says "empty". Use at your own risk of running out. But you can run down to MTE = 0 with confidence.

(and the computer in the 2.0 uses 16.5 for calculations but they really hold about 18.5 gallons. They have reserve capacity also.)

I did not know this. However it sounds like a Clint Eastwood quote “Do you feel lucky”.
I must admit I was surprised that the fuel light did not light with what I thought was only a gallon of gas remaining.
As far as the transmission goes when I select eco do I need to select it after every time I shut off the truck?
I have noticed that when the truck is driven in the normal mode fuel economy drops close to 5 mpg. When my wife drives the truck she never selects the eco mode she just drives and never looks at where the needle is for gas or electric. I can always tell by the gas gauge when she has driven the truck.

I've had my Hybrid for 13 months, and 15K miles. My current tank, I'll get 825 miles out of it. Having the heat on doesn't affect my MPG, now having my AC on will.

Here in PHX, we hit 100 yesterday and will be bouncing between 95-100 for the next week and the second week of May will stay in triple digits until Oct.

This photo below was taken 3 days ago, I have traveled 721 miles and have 105 MTE. I drive only on city street and drive the speed limit. I'm sure after this tank, and my AC on, I'll be back in the mid 50's again.

What do you do to achieve 62,5 mpg over 620 mi?

55 mpg over the course of a tankful. Wow! I enjoyed reading about your driving on crowded freeways which led to this fantastic result. Indeed crowded interstates and other highways are not the enemy of mpg’s because you are able to drive in electric so much at slow speeds.

How crowded are Cali interstates? I have little experience but I will relate a story. Wife and I were visiting daughter in LA, who was working in LA one summer. We had flown to LA. Our daughter let us use her car during the day. Her parting words to us: whatever you do stay off the interstates.

These were not the days of GPS on cell phones. In fact, it might have been before cell phones. Later that morning, past what I would call rush hour time in the East, we were looking at a map. The most direct route was a freeway. How bad could it be I said.

Well, we got on the ramp and almost immediately came to halt. No choice but to get on and creep to the next exit where we got off.

So I can easily imagine staying in electric in your Mav for long periods of time. The only time I reached 55 mpg’s was on an interstate in heavy traffic in the Atlanta area.

I have had my Maverick for 13 months and 15K miles. I drive in Eco mode, I drive the speed limit, and I only drive in the city, my commute is 17 miles one way. On my way to work, it's a very wide street that allows for three lanes of traffic, I drive in the middle lane, which allows me to be consistent in my speed (no faster than 45) and make many of the stop lights. The only time I hyper mile is coming to a stop. Many people new to the Maverick won't get 62 MPG at first it takes to understand how to drive the maverick.

I'm similar to Eagle11.

I get 55 to 65 MPG Monday thru Friday.
Keeping it about 35 to 45 mph.
11 miles each direction commute.
I begin at +10 from sea level and end at +10 from sea level so same MPG both directions of travel.
Slippery mode.
EV as much as possible.
Don't miss any available regen.
But coasting to lights is better than extra regen.
But keep in mind you need empty space in the battery to put the regen into. If you're not using a lot of EV you don't have a lot of room for regen.

I wish I had a GoPro.
You'd see I travel with the flow of traffic impeding no one. I just choose routes with 35 to 45 limits.

On the weekends wife and I travel some on the freeways and I haul some stuff bring the tank average down some.

So I'm getting 700 miles per tank.
Best ever was almost 800.
So I know I could get 800 avoiding higher speeds all together.

Some just don't have the option of driving 35 mph to work and back. I get it. Don't feel bad. Time is worth using more gas.

People sometimes say "68 mpg for 10 miles is easy, nothing to brag about".

Sure.

But I'm stacking 20, 30, or 40 of these short trips in a row.

Thanks. Excellent description. I have driven my Mav for 5,305 mi. Cumulative mpg’s 42.5 per dash. Took one 1,450 mi trip from north GA to south FL and back; estimated mpg of 38.5 (36.2 calc’d). So for the other 3,855 mi I have averaged 44.3 mpg (dash). Calc’d mpg would be about 42.0. I’m not dissatisfied with this, but I’m still learning.

Have you changed your oil yet? If so, at what mileage?

No. I just hit 7000 miles.
Except for 900 miles towing, the rest have been very gentle miles. I probably will soon.

Oil life monitor says 37% remaining.

I was late in my oil change, I did it at 10K miles, but I saw the oil and it looked good.

Well that long traffic trip was on a segment of I-580, which was used by Mythbusters for a episode about traffic. It is used by many in the central valley that commute into/out of the bay area for work.

Yes, that LA traffic sucks. There is even traffic in some areas at night, and weekends.
