Don't use anything besides the Instant MPG reading. I lock cruise control at the speed limit. If the ICE comes on I accelerate about 5-10mph faster for a min, then let it coast back to the applied cruise speed. It will usually kick back to electric mode.

When you hit 0 MTE you still have about 2 gal left. Pending on how far you are from a gas station, driving habits, or if you carry a can with you, just fill up when it estimates under 50. That way if you have an emergency you can still have that last bit a range.

Well that long traffic trip was on a segment of I-580, which was used by Mythbusters for a episode about traffic. It is used by many in the central valley that commute into/out of the bay area for work. Yes, that LA traffic sucks. There is even traffic in some areas at night, and weekends.
