Any ideas on how to remedy this other than don't clean the interior while in the car wash? Maybe a button to press to put in drive?
Don't most automatics nowadays need to have the brake applied to go into gear. Is that not the case for this type of gear selector?

Fossil you have just educated the masses with this video. The problems people are having are now nevermore thanks to the L (lock) button as you showed us. No more carwash blues for anybody now.

If someone really is that poor, cannot afford to regularly put gas in the tank, buying a new vehicle likely isn't a smart idea.
I get it you're from Canada, and what I understand as a wealthier part of it. But most people in the US are poor, up to their ears in debt, and make terrible financial decisions. Like buying a $25,000 truck at $330 a month for 84 months, because they need something reliable enough to get their kids(that they cant afford but cheaped on rubbers anyway) to school, that also has a bed because they have a fledgling construction or lawncare buisness. A fill up can cost $100 these days and shit happens.

Just watched a video of a BS Badlands kicking ass in the woods with a Timberline. I cannot wait to goet our Tremor!

I thought so too, hence my earlier post. But it was pointed out OP was going from neutral to drive. That doesn't need the brake depressed. You need to press brake to go from park to gear, but not from neutral. I tried it out on my Edge which has a shift lever. I was able to put in drive from neutral without pressing brake. But you have to squeeze the button and then it makes a noise and takes some effort hence a bit different.

Moral of the story, be careful when in neutral what happens to the shift dial.

So after the rain stopped and looks like a few days of good weather. I decide to stop in the car wash. I pull and the guy directed me in. I roll down the window to accept his 'dash wipe' to dust off the dash and other components. Windows are getting suds. I open the pack and start wiping things down. Steering, radio, top of the dash, console... I glance out the window and it appears that I am moving rather quickly. Thinking I got just the basic wash, maybe it was jumping ahead and skip a process. Then I remember, there was a car in front of me and through the soapy windshield, I see it. BAM!! I had just applied the brakes, but not before contact. It appears that while dusting off the console, it had brushed against the shifter and rotated it one notch to drive. Very minor damage but if one had hit the gas instead of the brake, a real catastrophe could have occurred.

Any ideas on how to remedy this other than don't clean the interior while in the car wash? Maybe a button to press to put in drive?

Most stupid people perhaps but not the majority of citizens. Those that opt for easy money, short cuts and counterproductive actions get what they deserve .

The owners manual. It does have instructions on how to put it into a temporary neutral mode for car washes, manually pushing car etc. and directions for returning to normal operation. Page 183 of manual.
They also give directions for the neutral tow mode for towing behind an RV, hybrid eCVT only,

Basically operator error here not the vehicle. Even if the Mav had a shifter it could also be bumped and put in drive.

Why didn't you just take the wipes and waited until the wash was complete then drive to one of the vacuum parking slots, put the Mav in park, turn it off then use the wipes.

Take a head count, the majority makes these decisions and is in these positions. All sides of aisles, all so called races(i dislike specifying human differences), all faiths or lack there of, people are human and they make dumb decisions all the time. One of the tools we have as humans though is a quick reacting brain to come up with solutions to our problems.

Most in this country and the world are poor. Far more admit to food insecurity than say they are happy with how much they earn. Saying people get what they deserve is a silly and counterproductive statement.

All of this is irrelevant of course because Ford did provide a way to push a Maverick, even if it is complex. The question is however, if the average $25000 vehicle owner is smart enough to figure it out.

Interesting. Strange design choice.
What? Literally every automatic I’ve ever seen or driven allows you to shift into drive from neutral, and vice-versa, without stepping on the brake.
