So I have a 2006 Ford ranger XLT four-wheel drive and the access cab has been great for me instead of a crew cab just a two cab. Does anyone else think if Ford did a rear seat delete with a secure storage toolbox instead of a bench seat people would buy it?

I certainly wouldn't and if you look at truck sales over the past 8-10+ years the buying public at large wouldn't either. There is a reason truck manufacturers have shortened the bed over the years to make room for a larger cab because that is what the vast majority of people want.

I think some fleet users might find that an attractive option, but as someone else already noted, those back seats are a mighty attractive selling point for more people. Kids, pets, road trips, etc. I have an older single cab Ranger, cannot WAIT to get a Mav with those back seats.

There is a buyer for every property. The same goes for every configuration of vehicle. Do I think they should offer it from the factory? Not really. Do I think the rear seats should either fold down flat or at least have a quick release to be removed when needed? Sure. I would love either of those. Or the elusive 60/40 split bench we keep wishing for. As long as it was a fold flat so I could use that 60 or 40 for loading something in there.

They won’t do it.

They will made a hybrid small cargo van off the Maverick’s platform in the coming years (if they hold to their plan). This will fit that use for those wanting to carry cargo inside the cabin.

At the end of the day, they may not even do the van plan. More profits in selling to households that entry-level fleet sales. I believe I read they are cancelling the transit connect in the US and just leaving the large transit van to be offered for fleet and commercial use. Probably more profitable.

Just seems sad the days of a regular cab style truck are gone and some of us would like a work style version instead of a people mover.

I think your best bet is to get working on you own design. Remove all the rear seat stuff and have a cabinet shop or yourself build a platform for a desired tool box setup. Sometimes you can get what you want if you do the work.

I call BS on the standard narrative that not enough people want an inexpensive single cab or extended cab small trucks. This narrative has been pushed by the industry for ages now. But the point is that nobody has offered a truly small and inexpensive single-cab pickup truck since 2011. Remember, an early Toyota truck was 3 feet shorter than the Maverick and had a longer bed.

I'll remind everyone that the standard Ford narrative for the last decade has been that nobody wants small trucks. I clearly remember Ford execs arrogantly telling the assembled media in 2011 that all those Ranger owners could buy F150s. When we didn't do that they released the midsize Ranger and then they told the media we would buy the new Ranger. That narrative also turned out to be a giant stinking pile of horse shit. And finally they released the Maverick like they had a stroke of brilliant insight.

I'll stick with the evidence of my eyes, thank you very much. I'm passed by dozens of old single cab Rangers every day in my area. Those guys won't let them go. I'm letting my single cab go under protest (and only because I need AWD).

Trickiest part will be the doors opening far enough. I think changing the hinges to the rear might be the best bet. Suicide door style to get it to swing out 90 degrees so you can have a proper drawer system. Im sure you will see em in about 5 years. Saw my first flatbed new style Ranger the other day. Also recently saw one with a utility bed. They brought those trucks over in what 2018-17? So yeah 5 years. You will see different bed configurations and all that interior stuff happening.

There was a builders guide PDF a while back I downloaded it but not sure how to upload it. Should be easy to find on here. Had dimensions for the whole truck.

Because the counterintuitive rules of CAFE killed them. Easier to stretch trucks longer/wider (and make those fat profit margins) than make it sufficiently fuel efficient to meet the targets.

Well then, I would go for the Super Cab and a bigger bed.

Alex On Autos said the same thing a few months back. He explained the truck CAFE rules were based on length (I think). And that was the secret reason we're not seeing small trucks. I'm gonna take Alex's word on it, because I don't want to wade through this monster...
