The Maverick is fine. It's a budget vehicle. What adult buys a car because it's "cool" anyway?

Also, if you think Tesla is better at building cars - not batteries, not electric motors - but the cars themselves than Hyundai/Kia.. I have a bridge to sell you. It's an electric bridge, too. Tesla is overrated. They changed the game but their build quality is super inconsistent and mostly terrible.

OP - sounds like the Kona is a better fit for you. Don't listen to these guys, listen to your instincts.
That first paragraph. The affordability and practicality make it cool. Affordable to buy affordable to drive. It's practical.

If I was betting in 4 years from now your Maverick will have more value left and cost you less to own then the Kona. You will be able to trade it in and get a cool ev. There will be alot of cool options by then.

I see a lot of older people on this forum. I don't know that "cool" matters... it certainly does not to me. I've had my share of "cool" cars, but I honestly could not care less these days what is perceived as cool or not or whatever. Does it work for me? Meet my needs? That's cool to me.

I had a similar dilemma and choice to make. I ordered my Ford Maverick Hybrid last June, sight unseen. I'd had a hybrid previously and was inspired that a small pickup (that actually looks like a pickup truck) would be created with a hybrid power train. Waiting the 8 months for delivery gave me plenty of time to consider alternatives that might result in a better outcome than waiting for a vehicle I'd never even experienced in real life.
While I was considering alternatives and weighing cost versus benefit, I encountered an offer that was almost unreal. If I decided not to take my Maverick after waiting so long, I knew that the dealer would be happy to resell and tack on a hefty ADM. Still, would I regret my decision later if I decided to go with an alternative? My choice was clear - continue to wait for and receive my Maverick Hybrid Lariat as ordered, or opt instead for a lifetime supply of Vegemite. I admit there was no shortage of sleepless nights while I tossed and turned, lost in the throws of indecision.
Then it happened that I passed an actual Ford Maverick on the street. I was able to see the size in proportion to other vehicles and also the smile on the driver's face as they silently pulled away from the stoplight in their hybrid pickup truck. I went home and did a little more research online and discovered that the majority of Ford Maverick owners love their vehicles, while feedback from people who have tried Vegemite have shown a much lower percentage of people who provided positive feedback. The evidence leaned heavily on the Maverick being the smarter choice.
Needless to say I received my Maverick Lariat Hybrid Pickup in late March and am happy that I made what I consider to be the better choice!
i went through your post, not twice.. but three times! i rarely do that.

part of me is telling me to wait also.. i have a co-worker who own a hybrid maverick and he loves it.. he drives his nearly 100 miles a day.. he still has to pay the same chunk of money to fill his new hybrid mav today as before the war. but that doesn,t seem to bother him,

i test drove The tesla, the niro, the ioniq, the mx30, the bolt,
Tesla by far was the one i liked the most..
Aesthetically, Tesla is the best for me. (Better looking than mach e imho,,) but next generation EV are nice too, just way too expensive for my budget.

the maverick hybrid meets my budget. I can't afford a tesla.

anyway, i also think im going to enjoy the maverick, i also think the maverick hybrid will retain a good resale value because new EV are hard to buy and old EVs sometime requires a new EV battery replacement that cost $8-10k. Because of that they don't hold their value as well.

but like i said, if i buy the maverick it will be my first pickup truck, im not used to a bed that has no climate control.

when we travel in a suv, we sometime sleep in the back.. can't do something like that in a pickup truck.

the bed is about hlpalf the size of an suv, you have to unroll the tonneau to carry larger a higher box. In a suv your box won't get wet ..

i can always add a top shell to the bed instead of a tonneau but they cost like $4k and most of them are ugly.

ive watched nearly 30 youtubes on the maverick hybrid already.. trying to decide,

dam dilemma

Well I see quite a bit of people say they are in their 70s.. but I'm half that age, at 36, and what is "cool" is something that has long since stopped mattering to me. If it ever did?

From what I read about the Kona is it’s got to much power for a front wheel drive vehicle, has very little back seat room and not much storage space.

I don't worry or care about age/coolness,especially when it comes to buying cars. That is for others to worry about. Grow up do what you want.

Heya

its a tough decision I must make this week.

i must admit, 8 months ago, The maverick hybrid wasn't my first pick.
i've always wanted an EV vehicle, like Tesla.. but EV are so dam expensive upfront. And the waiting time to get an EV is even longer.

And mainly because all the EV in 2019-2020-2021 had recalls, fire hazards, limited range, last summer i decided to order the maverick hybrid,
So the maverick hybrid was just a backup plan.

As im typing this, my Maverick hybrid is in production with Sent to Plant status according to the vin. in a month it will be in my hand.
the Hybrid i ordered is an xlt with sunroof, copilot, hard dropin bed, hard roll up tonneau, blue velocity.

the salesman did a great job securing the order, we spoke over the phone like 7 or 8 times since we initiated the order, each time , we spent over an hour on the phone together just talking and chatting about life. We almost became good friend . He is probably the best salesman i know,, with over 20 years experience with Ford,(but i know, this should be business and strictly business). But i will definately feel bad if i have to call him to cancel my order after everything we went through,

the reason i want to cancel, is that i have a chance to grab a 2019 used Hyundai Kona EV

the kona EV is about $ 6K more expensive and has 13k miles already.
there is a recall on Kona battery.. and they are pined to 90% due to fire issue. it is the color ive wanted with a sunroof.

but it is also a small vehicle..

the maverick on the other hand is a bigger vehicle, allows you to do light offroading, but cost 5 times in gas to operate and probably theft magnet,

the maverick hybrid will cost me $90 of gas every 600 miles
the same 600 miles on the kona will cost me $20 at most
if only this stupid ukrenians / russian war could stop and gas could drop back to what it was.. would not mind paying $50 every 600 miles.
but gas price won't return to what it was.. and it may keep going up..
45 mpg was great in 2018 but it is nothing in 2022.. you need 125mpg to equal an ev car.

im not a truck guy, i don't carry tools, im not into construction business or anything, i don't haul, but we do travel and do campground (light offroading)
i hate theft for some reasons, and so far thieves aren’t looking for ev.

so here i am.. don't know what to do.

2022 maverick hybrid made of cheap plastic or a kona ev 2019 with recalls and fire hazard..
I have had a Ford Fusion Hybrid for 4 years now. I get on average 45 mpg and spend no where near $90 every 600 miles. I get 550 miles per tank of gas and right now it cost me about $60 to fill the tank. I can tell you with great confidence that you will not spend $90 for every 600 miles you drive. I can also tell you that electric rate are going up and will continue to go higher and there is no end in sight for that either. I cannot wait to get my Mav FE hybrid in another month or so. I think you should reconsider.

No offense but I think that you hit it correctly. "If it ever did?". Also, sometimes "cool" is used when meaning "fun" or something "different". And all of that is cool and to each their own. 😎

I think I just like driving something that not many people have. At this point, the Mav fits that very well, lol. Especially since I don't have mine yet.

Explain to me how you figure $90 worth of gas would only get you 600 miles on a hybrid Maverick. At $4/gal, you could buy 22.5 gal. If you average only the epa average rated 37 mpg, your range would be 832 miles.
$4/ gallon? Not if you live in Kalifornia or NYC

Well good luck with your vehicle. I personally would never go full EV because then I won't be able to go on road trips and the batteries stop holding charge after several years and I'm someone who keeps my cars for long periods so it's just not practical for me.

And the hopes that EV will become the standard so that charging stations will be everywhere and they will develop some kind of method to allow you to take long road trips without having to stop for 13 hours at a time to recharge I feel is a pipe dream because if you really see what it takes in raw materials to make EVs, you'll probably come to the same conclusion most people I know would. And that it is not a sustainable practice if every one of the hundreds of millions of vehicles in the world are to be replaced with EVs. Or even if the tens of millions of cars in the US are replaced with EVs.

I think as time goes on and the issues are realized (and really the money is paid back to the big political campaign donors who have invested in the EV industry) they will probably move in a different direction. But hope you enjoy it.

Dear Jeep owner,

this stupid ukrenians
did not choose to fight a war and jack up your gas prices. Go ahead and buy that Kona. You will drive it until they build you a new Maverick or you can finally get your hands on a Mach-E/ Tesla. And if you do some research you will find out the Federal government gives out $7,500 tax credit towards a purchase of a NEW EV. You gotta be a real jeep owner to buy used Hyundai in this current market. And provided you are buying your Maverick at MSRP, you will be buying it under value. It will be so easy to get out of it. But hey... who am I to tell what to do. Tell your friend to give you the deposit back and buy some extended warranty on that roller skate.
Best regards,
Your friendly neighborhood Ford salesman
