Because I can't decide, I currently have a deposit on a '22 Ridgeline and '22 Maverick XLT AWD, luxury pkg
Due to availability and my semi-remote location, I have no way to test drive a Maverick. I am going solely off trusted Youtube reviewers opinions and specs.
I have fairly extensive driving time in a relative's Passport, the cousin to the Ridgeline.
- Their performance/mpg numbers are very close.
- Ridgeline has a solid reliability reputation and resale.
- Something about the Maverick seems more "fun." Like a VW GTI truck.
- Ridgeline is larger, more cargo, slightly more towing. Likely is better for regular towing overall due to the V6.
- Maverick is ~$9k cheaper. The extra money up-front for the Ridgeline is ok with me if it's largely retained at resale, which is hard to compare with a brand new model.
- I have a negative reliabilty experience history with Ford from 7k mi on. I had a Honda that rust was the issue, not reliability.

The Ridgeline is due to arrive next week and the Maverick the first week of February. Once I pass on the Ridgeline, it will be a loooong wait again. So, I need to be decisive soon.

Anyone have experience with both?

Edit: I forgot to mention I have two kids. And, in the summer spend many days going to the beach and mountains.

I have a family member with a Ridgeline and I've only seen and sat in a Maverick as mine hasn't come in yet.

If the mpg is about the same as your going Ecoboost with AWD and you don't really care about the 9k,I would say the Ridgeline is a step above in all areas including the way everything looks and feels. You can tell it's a more expensive vehicle.

That said, I am getting the hybrid Maverick because of the mileage and I do care about the 9k. However, I'm not fooling myself into thinking it is comparable to the Ridgeline. For what matters to me though, it is better.

I was the same way as you. I did a lot of research and reviews. most of the reviews were from youtube and from those guys Driving Sports TV, Truck King, TFLoffroad, and many others.

In the end, I compared the differences between both and chose.
I went for the maverick!

I owned a Honda Ridgeline RTL-E since 2017 and just traded it in for the Maverick Lariat FX4.
The ride comfort on the Maverick is just as good as the Ridgeline. If you want all the advanced features that the Ridgeline offers, you will need to order the Lariat, luxury package along with all the other packages, adaptive cruise control, FX4, co-pilot, etc.
No doubt after 69K miles on the Ridgeline, the reliability was great. This is my first Ford so time will tell how reliable it is. I do love the size of the Maverick which fits very nicely in my garage and the parking garage at work.
Also, the interface on the Mav. is amazing. It actually has dial knobs to change the volume and other temperature controls. The Honda on the other hand only has all digital flat screen so you have to go through tons of menu screens in order to make any changes. So, you have to be careful not to get into a wreck since a lot more time is required for you to look at the Honda dash screen while driving.

The MPG difference between the Maverick and Ridgeline are actually somewhat significant (21 vs 25 combined). The Ridgeline is likely to cost you $250-450 more per year in fuel. Worth considering if the costs are important to you.

I've driven a gen1 RL for a couple years now and love everything about it save for the 15-18 mpg. I ordered a Mav 10 weeks ago and am looking forward to it's arrival.

Your choice.

A cool new pick up or a faux minivan.

I jest. Good luck. Get the truck.

Ordered my Maverick Hybrid Lariat with Lux Package on 10/21. By the time it arrives my 2007 loaded Ridgeline will hit 300k miles. The Ridgeline has been a great buy and held up nicely. However, it has never gotten over 18 miles per gallon. I got tired of replacing catalytic converter sensors ten years ago, and just learned to live with poor gas mileage, and engine lights constantly on. For me it was all about getting a hybrid or EV for my next vehicle. I ended up getting my Maverick and a new $35k boat for what I was considering paying for the other vehicles I was considering. Planning on living large in retirement!

Different vehicles in many ways. I would take delivery on the Ridgeline, drive it until the Maverick arrives and then base your decision on the test drive. You can walk away from the Maverick if you want to. If you want the Maverick, I would imagine your Ridgeline would not lose value at trade in based on the crazy used market right now.

I was also on the fence. I was also looking at the Ridgeline, but the Black Edition, because I'm a sucker for black accents on white. The problem became that I wanted all of the same features I had on my Grand Cherokee and that would have landed me at close to $48k out the door. My wife and I can afford it easily, but we really didn't want to deal with it. Plus, I wanted something with better gas mileage than my Jeep, and the Honda was going to be the same.

In the end, the Mav is the perfect combination of price, size and features, and it's just fun and cool.

If the higher price doesn't worry you, if you need to tow more, if the lower MPG's don't worry you, if you just feel icky about Ford in general, maybe the Ridgeline is the better choice for you.

Ordered XLT Hybrid in August. Currently drive a 2010 Ridgeline with 145,000 miles. Finally had enough waiting and bought a 2018 Ridgeline yesterday. Just got tired of the way my dealer treated me from the beginning and figured with still no build date or any communication ever from Ford or anyone else, I was looking at a summer delivery at best. Honestly the constant reading about gas tanks, blue tooth issues, paint chips, remote starting etc I decided the known quality of the Ridgeline brand and my complete satisfaction with mine was more important that just improved has mileage. I wish I could cancel my own Hybrid order directly through Ford so my dealer never gets it.

I'm probably the odd one out here, but if money is not a concern, than I would get the ridgeline. Its a better built more powerful, more capable unibody truck with a proven track record. If you don't care about paying a bit more for the truck, I will assume the MPG difference does not matter either.

Having said that, if I was looking at the ridgeline, I would also take a hard look at the new frontier. Frontier would be a much more capable vehicle from the truck point of view, while giving up some of the creature comforts a bit.

These would be the questions I would ask myself

  • How long do you plan on keeping the vehicle?
  • What purpose will it be used for?
  • How much does cost factor into the equation?
  • Which has better technology?

If you will be keeping the vehicle until the wheels fell off, I would go with the Honda. A normally aspirated engine should outlast a turbocharged engine all things considerEd equal. If this is a leased pickup, it does not matter other than potential lost time in the shop. I did not have any mechanical issues with my 2.0 Escape for the three years I had it but was not willing to take the chance on keeping it a decade with direct injection and a turbo to worry about.

What size vehicle do you need? The Ridgeline is larger than the Maverick - at least in class (mid size vs. compact). That may or may not be a factor for you. How important are things like step in height, ground clearance, interior space to you?

You stated the cost difference is $9k. That is a good amount of money. Does that allow you to get a loaded Lariat rather than a Ridgeline Sport base model and still have money left over?

I don’t know much about the tech offered in the Ridgeline. Is it better than the tech in the Mav? Safety features - how do they compare?

Best of luck with your decision. Let us know how it goes. I don’t think you go wrong either way, it comes down to what YOU want and need.
