I took this picture while fueling on Christmas day 2025 to show my gas choices. Very few stations have 91 octane. 89 octane is 71 cents more than 87 and 93 octane is $1.21 more. I use 89 octane a lot less than 87, grimacing every time. The gas door has an 87 label on it but I feel that I am not maintaining my truck. I'm WAY to obsessive about this. Note the 2.38 price. Four months later it is $3.98. Ouch!

Same here. It runs GREAT on 93. I usually run 89 octane on a day-to-day basis, but run 87 on long highway trips where I'm racking up the miles and don't benefit from the extra power that higher octane gives you.

87 is fine to use all the time though, if that extra jump to 89 doesn't feel worth it. It can be difficult to justify 2 extra octane points for the price. Gotta love those midwest fuel prices though! I bought 87 on a trip to NOLA last week for $3.449.

Imagine my surprise when I was out in CO this week to find that they sell 85 octane as "regular". Costco offered only 85 and 91.

I have used 87 octane since it's been a thing. Only use higher for my small engines and that's only because that comes ethanol free . I don't think I've ever seen ethanol free 87 although it may exist.

There's a few in MI that sell 87 non-ethanol.

Got back into UT this past weekend, stopped in Moab for fuel. Noticed I was pumping 85... Stopped about 6 gallons in and topped off with 91. I miss the south.....

I also miss the days when 87/89/93 were only 10 cents difference.

Even though, at high elevations, 85 may work I wouldn't trust going below the octane specified in my owner's manual. If emergency use, such as that was all that was available until you got to a larger market, as little as possible so you can dilute it.

Do you notice any effective difference? Besides the cost?

It MIGHT be a little sluggish with 87 octane but I doubt it. I don't get on it hard and when I need it to move it moves independent of what gas I put in the tank. Dash read 25.6 the first few months when I bought it new. It has read 25.8 the last several months without deviation and I haven't futzed with the settings. With the previous Tacoma, I gassed up every week. I get at least 2 - 2 1/2 weeks with the ecoboost. I feel like I am wasting money on higher octane but I want to listen to Ford in spite of bad advice on oil changes.

My $3.65 93 octane ethanol free jumps to $4.99 and premium 10% is $3.89
So I went back to 87 regular at $3.69.
I ve mostly used non ethanol for most all my 17,400 miles.

I’ve lost roughly 1.0 mpg and am fine with that.
All I gotta do is drive a little bit mellower.
My 87 10% is top tier. I’m good to go.

Since your president that we dislike up hear in Canada is spiking the sale of hybrids and one reason I bought my Maverick. I don't know how people are paying for all the bigger trucks. Can I ask why you would put 91 in the Maverick. I have heard that the only real benefit is to prevent ping? I used 91 for two previous AUDI S3 and S4 but it was required for those engines.
