Terrible gas mileage!

I am two months into owning and daily driving a 2025 Hybrid AWD. All of the reviews, window sticker, and published data indicated that I would be getting 37 mpg combined city/highway. Well, that is my daily routine - about 50% city and 50%highway based on total miles driven. The city may not be bumper to bumper like New York traffic, but there are plenty of stop signs and lights with average speeds around 35 mph.

I am only seeing 32 mpg on my short and long term trip computers readings.

I do not use the Economy mode because the vehicle is pretty slow already. And I am not pounding the pedal constantly to race it around. Pretty normal stuff and not loading the bed or towing (yet).

I have about 1,200 miles on it so far. Thought it might get better over time, but has not. Also, I notice that the 2.5 liter gas engine is on far more than I would have expected. Stays off on very slow starts up to about 10 mph, then the ICE kicks in.

What is going on here? Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions? Can Ford make any changes to improves this?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ICE runs more in cold weather to provide heat... turn down the cabin temperature and use heated seats/steering wheel if equipped to minimize this.

Turn on the EV coach to help you optimize your battery run time. Get up to speed and let off the gas momentarily and ease back on to kick it into EV mode.

The fuel economy improves as you break in the engine, you should have a full break in by 5,000 miles.

Well - Economy mode doesn't impact the available power, it only lightens up the range on the Go pedal a bit - so you have to press perhaps 5% more on pedal to hit the same 25% on the power meter - if you have it displayed to notice.
Meant to make it easier for the driver to be more economical by maybe making it easier to stay in EV mode when you need to toe the line without making the ICE turn on. And it backs off the AC somewhat to conserve the HVB.

If you mean is pretty slow already, because you are attempting to stay in EV more from stops - ya, not really a great method to use the small HVB and EV mode.

But if you mean normal driving outside a few attempts to stay in EV mode, it seems slow - then I think you are probably punching it, and used to that from prior cars.
Rarely do I find riding with a jack-rabbit driver they are aware they are doing it. I'll comment about leaving the other cars around us in the dust, half-jokingly, and I usually hear "oh" as unaware. Usually about the time they are still accelerating into an upcoming red light!

Anyway - I've noticed 25-30% power on meter still puts me ahead of most drivers at a line by a little bit, ICE is obviously on, and then once up to speed the coast or low power maintaining speed allows the EV to kick in, or letup the Go pedal and carefully back down to allow it on.

So don't waste your HVB in EV mode on accelerations or up steep inclines - just drive smartly for an ICE vehicle for fuel efficiency and the traffic around you - and allow the EV to be used on at least coasting and down inclines, and maintaining speed as long as possible.
Really stinks to use up your HVB as you reach a red light and then the ICE has to run while sitting - finally turning off when light turns green.

We recently hit 15,000 miles since March! Getting into EV mode is like gently threading the needle but its very short lived since its only a 1.1 kWh battery. The most we've gotten up to is 39.1 MPG and we are driving in Normal mode and do use seat and wheel heat more than HVAC. I'd love specifics for getting to more....heck above 45 MPG would be amazing so if you have some very specific tips please do share. Thanks!!!

I'm at just over 2000 miles and averaging around 34-35 (was 38 before it got cold) for what that's worth, but i know how to eek out mileage in a hybrid as a few weeks ago i traded my 2014 Accord hybrid for a Maverick hybrid. I don't think the Maverick is slow at all.

You won’t get real world 37mpg combined.

After almost 1 year and 11k miles I’m getting 34mpg.

I’ve never heard someone call 32mpg terrible. I wouldn’t hook my relativity to the EPA number but rather reality and the fact you have an AWD 4k truck with 1400lb payload that is getting 32 mpg.

Pretty freakin great.

Ambient temperature, the mix of highway/city miles, and driving style all impact gas mileage. The last is the one most readily controlled by most people. While there are some hybrid-specific consderations to improving gas mileage, it mostly comes down common sense steps that apply to ICE vehicles as well. Smooth and steady driving at reasonable speeds is your friend, hard acceleration and braking and excessive speed are not.

I wonder if the OP has been able to achieve at or near the EPA estimated mileage with his previous vehicles.

Something has to be wrong with your truck. My MY24 got 46.7 mpg on my trip home from picking it up at the dealer. I considered trading up to a MY25 Hybrid AWD with 4K but not if this the difference in MPG.


UPDATE: I did trade my MY24 Hybrid in for a MY25 Hybrid AWD w/4K towing. It has been miserable cold here in Northern Ohio since and I am still under 2K miles. I do expect it to do better come spring but so far the total average has been 34 MPG with over 38 MPG trips on warmer days. Substantially less while towing. Idling to warm up the truck in cold weather also has a big negative impact on MPG.

If you are not already, I recommend the pulse and glide method on the freeway.

Hmmm 🤔 seems like the reponses say
Driver error to not get better mpg.
Or
IF you prefer
Driver corrections needed to achieve better mpg.

Pretty much like all/most vehicles are affected by driving style...
However seems the Hybrid has its own style that needs to be applied.

Im glad to not have to adjust how i drive with ecoboost and still get better mpg than previous vehicle and be happy with.
And that will be less than the 32mpg in the op post.

Slow your roll to get better mpg. IF thats the goal 😁
