2025 Hybrid. How do you decide when to change the oil?
Do you trust the "onboard oil quality monitor" to decide when to change the oil?
Do you go by the mileage?
Do you listen to the dealer?
On my previous vehicle, I used to change my full synthetic oil every 10 to 12 000 miles. My dealer put a sticker after the last oil change, to change the oil again in 4000 miles. Why to pay more for full synthetic oil if I still have to change it that often?
I looked for other discussions on this forum about this subject but, surprisingly, I found none.

What interval is reasonable and makes you feel comfortable?

The owner's manual says to change when the light comes on, or the lesser of 10k(?) miles or 1 year.
My dealer "recommends" 3k miles, and they also charge 2x the price of any other shop.

I change my own at 8-9k. It makes me and my truck feel special. I'm better than the poor fools that change at 10k, but I'm not getting scammed like the rich fools who change at 3-5k.
I am right and everyone else is wrong and also stupid. /s

Is it not best to follow the oil change recommendations of Ford? They spent lots of money to install an oil monitoring system. Why not use it. When it says 20% or so change it.

Ask the magic 8 ball every 1k miles over 5k, it's the only way to be sure.

For my hybrid.
Short and sweet.
10,000 miles regardless of time. 6 months or 18 months doesn't make a difference to me. Not much moisture here in the desert southwest to worry about.
Today we have 108° and 8% humidity.
Being a hybrid I know if I change it at 10,000 indicated it's probably somewhere between 8,000 and 9,000 miles.

I really wish there was an engine hour meter similar to aircraft. It would makes sense for a hybrid gas engine.

I'm in the Pacific Northwest, and do mostly short trips of 20 miles or less in town with rare highway driving, so in my particular use case, because the intermittent operation of the engine often does not get it to high enough operating temperature for long enough to "boil off" crankcase condensation, I replace the engine oil and filter every 3000 - 4000 miles.
Just protecting the investment.

By the book, you can follow the oil life monitor exactly and still have a warranty until 60K, or 100K with the ESP a lot owners go for. The problem is, the problems with premature wear and sludge from extended intervals usually come after the warranty expires. Even if the problems arise during warranty, it's a hassle not having your vehicle for an extensive repair and praying they put it all back together right, assuming you don't have to fight to get it fixed right in the first place.

Most mechanics now recommend 5K intervals unless you are doing long miles on the highway for most of your miles and using the proper filter + oil for extended intervals. If you really want to know instead of guessing, do a blackstone analysis and have the oil wizes @ bob is the oil guy tell you how long the interval should be.

Personally I have been doing the 5Ks for awhile now, but the stupid belly pan on this vehicle + needing to punch the filter to not drip oil on the coolant hoses conveniently located right next to the filter is leading me down the path of actually doing an analysis and using a better quality oil (like Penzoil ultra) for a longer interval. I guess at 41, crawling around on the ground doing oil changes has lost some luster too, but I'm too stubborn to pay someone for an oil change.

With 10K road miles on odometer - you are likely to have 5-6K on the engine.

Follow the OLM, which will shorten that 10K for extreme driving conditions of towing, long idles, extreme hot or cold for huge chunks of time.

Literally costs $40 for filter and synthetic oil. Takes approximately 30mins to change oil. How many months does it take you to drive 5000 miles? If you don't have tools or equipment, $100 for ramps and necessary tools. If you are financially concerned, DIY will save you money fairly quickly.

Oil threads on forums rarely are profitable. Too many people with opinions, and not enough factual data. I would suggest you go on a binge in the Youtube channel for The Motor Oil Geek. Without testing there is no way to know the optimal time/miles to perform an oil change for your specific use. Some prefer to just change it on a set number of miles and assume that is overly cautious. That may or may not be true. If you live in a place that gets cold and short trip then you may actually be going longer than you should on that oil. Sludge is the factor then. A used oil analysis is the way to know for sure and generally a couple of samples will need to be tested. Once you have some test data you will know how to dial in your own oil change interval.

That being said the "intelligent" oil life monitors are actually using engine data to do the count down for the oil change. The OLM in the Maverick falls into the category of a intelligent monitor. The Motor Oil Geek has a video explaining how this works in a GM vehicle and it is generally conservative. If you doubt it then get a sample of the oil and send it off to be tested.

Good luck with your oil change decision. Of course the oil you select could be a factor as well. But as you will find out once you start watching The Motor Oil Geek all oil formulations are different and all act/react differently based on the application. There is no way to know how the oil you are using is formulated or holding up without the tests. Motor oil is very advanced chemistry today. There are huge differences in the different oils. There is another forum "Bob is the Oil Guy" and there is a category over there for virgin 0 miles oil test data. This of course isn't static as the manufacturers change formulations. But it will give you an idea once you get familiar with the test reports how an oil is formulated. Sadly it is not straight forward. Oil marketing is mostly nonsense.

Depends on which octane gas you use. Add the sum of your octane numbers, subtract from 20, then times that by 1000 to give you your interval in miles.

For example, I use 87 octane.
8+7=15
20-15=5
5x1000=5,000
So my interval is 5,000 miles.
