The estimated price needs to come with a grain of salt. The rapid inflation of the last 6 months has cause the proposed Slate EV pickup to go from "under $20,000" to now estimated "starting at $30,000".

If Ford says this pickup will cost $30k, I'm pretty sure it will be closer to $50k in 3 years when it comes out. Maybe more. Sure hope our income keeps pace with inflation...

yep - BYOB - bring your own battery

they're just going to be competing against their existing truck line - most are thrilled with their hybrids and the mileage, gas prices have stabilized, there's no 'big need' for a new EV truck regardless of their 'new and improved' technology - for the relatively small number who want they'll buy it but it will be competing with the mav and the ranger unless they intend to dump the Ranger altogether. You'd think they'd go the EV SUV route as a first exhibit of this new big thing.
I doubt they just started planning it in the last few months. For years there have been incentives for EVs, and mandates seemed likely, at least for fleets. Electrification has looked to be the future for at least a decade.
And selling more EVs will help their CAFE ratings no matter what.

You *do* understand that the Slate was advertised as $27,500 and then $20k after the federal $7500 EV incentive, right?

And you *do* understand that now that the $7500 will be going away, the new advertised price is "mid 20's".

You're able to understand why the price adjustment happened, right?

Well, an efficient, hybrid small pickup, an electric mid-sized, and a gas powered full lineup of heavier duty pickups seems to fill out Ford's product line pretty decently.

The Ranger doesn't even sell that well, it wouldn't be a huge loss to just convert it to an EV. I'd bet they can sell just about the same number of EV mid-sized pickups as they do the Ranger nowadays.

For a while, Toyota offered 5 different concurrent SUVs that weren't very different in size. Ford knows it can sell pickups even if they are just a few inches different in size; and if you're debating which Ford pickup to buy, you still end up buying a Ford pickup...

I suspect the Ranger will remain, but be a ICE/Hybrid, and the Ranchero will be totally EV. And have different body styling.

I'm interested to see what this platform develops into, maybe even have hell freeze over and Ford + GM pool their resources into LFP batteries, and other new developments on the base tech so China doesn't have a monopoly on affordable EVs.

As much as I like my Maverick, I'll be happy if it's my last vehicle with an ICE.

they've already proven that the take rate on EVs has hit a low threshold and that was with the lofty gov't handouts, unless this big new thing can get 500 to the charge it's just going to be yet another loser in their annual 5 billion$ EV loss stable of 'no thanks' vehicles.

Contrary to our political environment steering us away from EV’s, the market is still there and still moving forward.

I am extremely excited about the new EV pickup and will seriously consider trading my Mav for one.

nobody is steering anyone away from anything - the previous admin was giving our money away to steer people towards them - and as we've seen that didn't work so great. No entity is saying you can't make or buy an EV - the previous gang was trying to thwart ICE sales by trying to institute mileage standards that could only be met by some non ready for primetime EV adoption.

Just because price of gas is stable now doesn't mean in less time than what eat my Wendy's things couldn't change, on my case I like certainty, I have solar panels at my home so I know for fact my electrical bill from now till 30 years later, so on my case a EV that I could charge a home makes a lot sense, mot only it save trips to the gas station, it save me time and money.

I know at 30k my sounds as a pipe dream, but even at 35-40k if they deliver a good product I would definitely jump in.

It's an endless game of trying to be economical - but eventually after they start lumping on the same taxes (or more) they do on gasoline via EV charging and add to that range anxiety EV adoptions will hit a wall. With hybrids many states are already lumping on additional fees because those darn things are just getting too many MPGs. Your solar panels are a good idea as long as the installation costs and maintenance numbers make sense.

Every admin since the incentives began, not just the previous one. But keep inserting politics into the topic and watch what happens.
