Maybe this isn't new I don't know but the video was released today. If I misunderstood anything my apologies, just trying to help.

Looks like another AI-generated video where a generated script is read and the "video" is just stock B-roll. Even the thumbnail doesn't make sense. Looks like a trailer body mounted backwards on the frame.

Fewer people without a clue of how to drive at all, not being able to tow big trailers is a bad thing?
not at all but it looks like it would apply to smaller loads as well.

Care to summarize what's in it for the benefit of others?
Since I watched it, I took some notes...

POST READER ALERT:
The notes below were based solely on the video's content that was posted above.
This poster assumes no liability for the veracity (or lack of same) in the video contents.

Summarized:
Trailers with a GVWR over 10,000 pounds require a driver to have a CDL - Federal statute, regardless of the weight the trailer is actually carrying. So towing an empty trailer rated for a 10K+ load means you can be cited unless you are in possession of a valid CDL.

There is also a CDL requirement for any combined towing vehicle and trailer, where the combined GVWR of both vehicles added together - the GCWR (gross combined weight rating) is in excess of 26K pounds regardless of the actual combined vehicle weight being towed.

California vehicle code 42030.1 enacted 1/1/2025 establishes a fine structure for overweight vehicles, based on exceeding the GVWR plate on the trailer and/or vehicle nameplate and/or the of the trailer and tow vehicle.

There is a lot of information regarding the different requirements by states, as to trailer brake requirements for a given trailer weight, and additional licensing requirements with a given state for travel within it when weights approaching federal CDL required licensing is in effect.

While that AI clickbait video may state that, it's Absolutely untrue.

The truth is that (Federally) a CDL is required if the trailer GVWR is greater than 10,000 lbs AND the combined GCWR of the trailer and vehicle is 26,001 lbs or greater.

A 14k GVWR trailer and a 12,000 (or less) GVRW tow vehicle requires no CDL...

Except perhaps California, it's always California

AI generated nonsense. I love the part where it shows the trailer being towed backwards with the hitch trailing behind the trailer.

There have been no changes to 49 CFR 383.91 that I can find.

And as always, RVs and camper trailers are exempt from CDL rules.

https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-...ubchapter-B/part-383/subpart-F/section-383.91

"
(a) Vehicle group descriptions. Each driver applicant must possess and be tested on his/her knowledge and skills, described in subpart G of this part, for the commercial motor vehicle group(s) for which he/she desires a CDL. The commercial motor vehicle groups are as follows:

(1) Combination vehicle (Group A) - Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more) provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds).

(2) Heavy Straight Vehicle (Group B) - Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more), or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) GVWR.

(3) Small Vehicle (Group C) - Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that meets neither the definition of Group A nor that of Group B as contained in this section, but that either is designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver, or is used in the transportation of hazardous materials as defined in § 383.5.

Yup, whenever people put those fake YouTube videos on, Inever click on them, The whole point is ‘clicks’

And keep in mind that DOT rules with trailers are when in commerce. Big difference if you are hauling your camper to the lake and not conducting business.

I like how the thumbnail was replaced with a different AI-generated one. At least the trailer is the right way around!

I agree. Don't get me wrong; there are tons of legit content creators that put a lot of effort into producing high quality original content. But there are also tons of channels whose production process is almost entirely automated. Prompt AI for a script on some topic, and there are apps that will take that script and generate videos with stock B-roll or cartoon animations and upload them on a schedule.

The YouTube algorithm rewards channels that upload regularly, regardless of production quality, which is why even original content creators tend to recycle/revisit the same series of topics.

I've pulled my own and rental trailers for years... Recently needed a little bigger trailer. 6x10 open trailer...but UHaul only had a 6x12 foot trailer. Go to pickup and they asked for my type of Vehicle, 2022 Maverick Hybrid...and their computer listed trailer size as not safe for rental to a Maverick Hybrid rated as 2,000lbs ...I've rented this size trailer multiple times and pulled with my Honda Element...with no issues...But it appears trailer rental places are really cracking down on what vehicle they allow to pull their trailers.

I asked and was told all trailers rentals are checked thru their national data base as to what vehicle are safe for specific size trailers.

I loved my Sport Trac right up to the point I needed to rent a motorcycle trailer from U-Haul.
20251028_093308.webp

U-Haul prohibited any of their trailers from being towed behind Ford Explorers model years 2002 to 2010, including the Explorer Sport Trac.
At that point my Sport Trac became a useless vehicle to me. I sold it within a few months.

They rented me a motorcycle trailer to pull behind my Toyota Yaris but not the Sport Trac
