Just brake... That's all you need to do. Brake and the RPM's will come down.
Yes, but on a very steep grade, the RPMs will immediately increase and rev too high.

Regular cruise is not the solution to steep grades because it allows gravity to make the Mav go much faster then the set speed. You have to manually brake often.

For Lariat owners, the adaptive cruise keeps the set speed no matter how steep because ACC also includes automatic braking when necessary.

This video may help.

That's what engine braking does.

Mine downshift, like nearly every auto vehicle I've ever had. I haven't looked to see if it applies brakes.

Pretty sure all trims have the ability for brake control.

Thoroughly agree with your other comments, but this is not true for standard cruise on the Mav, unless mine is defective.

(ACC is not standard on Lariat as implied by previous post)

What's "too high"? I've never seen it get anywhere near redline on any descent. I don't understand all the concern about this.
Too steep of a descent will rev the engine too much. I wish the low button only dropped the gear one lower every time you pressed it. That would be like downshifting to control your speed with a manual trans.

Jerry,

Yes with standard cruise, gravity can take you much faster than the setting. The hwy patrol at the bottom of the hill loves this!

ACC is standard on Mav Lariat trims as of the 2024MY.

ACC is essentially a radar system. The vehicles have the ability to apply brakes. 360 packages will do so to avoid collisions.

I have not tested ours on a "steep" hill, whatever that degree reference here is, but I've not had an issue with the speed wandering with cruise and I just used the cruise control for the last 4.5 hours.

The whole thing about the L button is for engine braking. It's maintains lower gears much longer.

I am well aware of this. I am interpreting your "too high" to mean the high RPMs are dangerous or damaging, which I don't see merit to. Now, if you mean that the vehicle speed (mph) gets too fast, I do not disagree with that! As for ACC on Lariat, okay - I am no longer following such things on subsequent model years, so I kind of forgot they change. ha ha

I have several quite steep inclines in my regular routes, so I often use L.

My truck has no ACC.

In Drive the transmission will use some engine braking but will slowly gain speed, in L it will maintain your speed when going downhill, if you want to go faster or slower just tap the gas or brake and the truck will keep the new speed.

I have 60,000 kms (~37,000 mi) on mine and no glitter in the oil so far, so I'll keep letting the engine rev to 5k downhill.

'24 Lariat EB AWD, found myself on a winding downhill stretch of road in PA this week, signed at 9% grade. Figured this was as good a time as any to try the L-button and see if there was any compression braking available, damn did the rpm's shoot up to 5k+! It certainly doesn't drop just 1 or 2 gears,,,,,,

Are you using the "L" button right? I have only used it after setting to flat tow. After shifting into neutral,I press "L" to confirm and leave it locked in neutral even after the engine is turned off.

The button has multiple functions. See post #18.

This video shows engine braking with low gear. If the descent is too steep, the RPMs will be too high. Take it out of low gear and manually brake until the descent is not so bad.

What you said is impossible and you should not do that!

It is impossible for the engine RPM to be too high in a hybrid. Oh. You mean "too high for your gut feeling."

You can and should leave it in L for as long as you have a steep hill needing speed control.

I agree that you should not do that, but I believe for different reasons, and it certainly is not impossible. All that happens in this scenario is RPMs drop and you speed up more. The computer will not let the transmission do anything detrimental.

It's been said multiple times that the Hybrid system (with it's regenerative braking) and the 2.0EB systems are different. You have a Hybrid, I have a EB.

So EB have a self-destruct button and the hybrids don't. Got it.
