He’s not a new member. Quite an extensive post history that he probably should have stumbled across posts on hybrid batteries - especially since he has a NOCO he’s aware of the 12v issue.

he’s a big guy. He can handle some jabs.
I'll add that he has also posted using Forscan to change some settings from factory defaults. I figure if you can do that, reading from the owners manual how to jump your truck is a lot simpler.

That's what I get for posting before reading everything....
Hey, bright side is you are in good company and we all agree with your assessment!

I am concerned he hasn't posted again though.

Those NOCO's if leads connected (since I'm pretty sure that's all the incorrect connection amounts to) - and you use the force mode to charge anyway - would they overheat & blow?

Or perhaps the incorrect hookup fail would still override that?

I do think OP should have known better but it is pretty disingenuous of Ford to put a black cover cap next to a red one - even with the + and little X over the battery clamp.

Putting a black plastic cover next to a similar red positive cover is just plain bad engineering. It should not have been similar and definitely not black, another color like yellow with an inlayed black pictogram would have stopped someone from assuming that it is a negative.

I only knew because I read it in a post while I was waiting for my truck ;-)

My low tech solution so I don't end up connecting to the wrong area.
I'm old and it could happen.
I'd rather it look stupid but save me from a mistake.
It probably won't last in the spring cleaning when I hose down the engine again.

This bolt seems to be made so a clamp won't slip off.

OP bailed! Hey man, no worries. I might have thought the same thing given that there is a black and red cover on each of those.

Not trying to belittle concern, but this all sounds like user error.

1. Incorrect remote jump points used underhood.
2. NOCO and many other jump start have safety function that if voltage read is <2 volts, the jump start device will not recognize battery and not turn on. If cables are correctly attached can then press manual override button on NOCO (button with exclamation point). This allows you to force on the jump start function.

From NOCO GB40 manual:
Low Voltage Batteries & Manual Override. The GB40 is designed to jump start 12-volt lead-acid batteries down to 2-volts. If your battery is below 2-volts, the Boost LED will be "Off". This is an indication that the GB40 can not detect a battery. If you need to jump start a battery below 2-volts there is a Manual Override feature, which allows you to force "On" the jump start function.

! Manual Override Button To enable, push and hold for three (3) seconds. WARNING: Disables safety protection and manually forces Boost "On". Only for use when a battery is too low to be detected.
Except Ford's labeling of posts under the hood is confusing.

I had to jump the 12v battery last week and couldn't do it via the power points under the hood, so I went to the battery posts and got the truck started, and it got me thinking: do my power points actually function? My battery tender showed no connection but it needs a minimum amount of charge detected in the battery to work, so I decided to put a multimeter on the power points (after fully charging the battery), and there's zero voltage on the meter. The Ford dealer will be looking into it today but I wanted to suggest you check your underhood power points, just in case...and I purchased a NORCO GB40 Boost+ jump box and it shows no connection when attached to the jump points. Good thing I discovered this in the driveway!
Your post and confusion is valid. Ford has confusing positive / negative graphics on items that are not related to the 12v. The positive is hidden under a red cap; the negative is a body bolt on the right.

I have the same NOCO GB40. I wonder if those short clamps will even reach both post.
I had the same concern after I purchased a NOCO GB40 so I checked and somewhat to my amazement they reached satisfactorily. Twas a relief.

I wonder what would happen if someone put a positive jump box lead on that black covered positive connection and the negative jump box lead on the correct post?
