Can you explain how to do this in more detail?
Sorry I don’t know how to downshift to avoid lugging in the Maverick 8speed. Maybe someone with experience can answer?

My paddle shifters make downshifts easier to explain:)

Automatics you kind of have to give a sharp jab at the pedal to make it kick down rather than slowwwwly easing into it, or it will stay in gear. Once you get used to a transmission, you can be making it do what you want with "foot gestures"... which in days of yore, miiight have caused your carby to dump enough in to make it sputter and stumble, but that was decades ago.

Thanks for explanation. My 1970 Nova automatic would “kick down” a gear when flooring it. I thought it actually had a button on floor under the gas pedal - but I might be misremembering that:)

It is becoming more fun to master a modern automatic transmission than it is to drive a stick shift. Although some will disagree with that.

At 79-80 mph, just push the little ‘L’ button in the middle of the rotary dial🤣.

I was curious about that. The computer won’t let you do a “money shift” I hope - instead put you into the gear with the highest revs that are safe.

Ok Chops, you try it and let me know how it turns out! With my luck, KABOOM! 😝 “Sorry, warranty doesn’t cover stupid”.

The cool down is where I begin to question these rules. Here in AZ turning off the AC is not an option in the summer. Why do we have an Auto setting on our climate control? That rule would render the remote starter useless for me.
It actually doesn't render it useless. You can set the air to come on automatically when you remote start regardless of the state it was in when you shut down. This information is in the remote start section of your user's manual. I don't have a remote start fob, but it works with FordPass remote start also.

How to downshift to avoid lugging?

Good question for the folks with the 8speed automatic - how do you guys/gals do it?

I drive my Lobo using the paddle shifters. Downshifting is easy - press the “L” paddle:)

A manual “stick shift” is more complicated (or fun?) because you have a clutch pedal that needs to be depressed when downshifting (eg 6th gear to 5th)
As I mentioned earlier, using tow/haul mode or sport mode will avoid low RPMs and lugging without manual intervention.

I remote start as I approach the vehicle, then usually drive like a grandma so don't worry about warm up or cool down. I've been running mid-grade for several month and it seems like the truck runs much better when it shifts to 8th going 35mph and 1200 rpm. Full synthetic when the trucks says so. So far that's been right at 5K. I do romp on it once a week or so.

Tow haul mode (don’t have sport yet on my FX4 Eco), seems to rev too high for my liking. But then again Ive always had V-8’s, and I guess it’s time to realize that a turbo 4 banger loves it! To an extent 😉

Yes, it is time. My 2012 Focus with the 2.0 Duratec Mazda/Ford engine that the first generation Ecoboost 2.0 was derived from spins at 3000RPM in top gear at 70MPH and gets 38MPG. Those engines easily last 300,000+ miles.

Anyway, we're talking about using tow/haul mode while running it hard, not while cruising. It is much better for any engine to be in the power band when running it hard than lugging it. If you think tow/haul mode revs too high, trust me, you'll never use sport mode.

Not under the pedal, but on the other end. In the 70's there was a mechanical connection (rod, cable or linkage) from near the carburetor to the transmission. Often there was also a WOT (Wide-Open Throttle) switch on the accelerator linkage to cutout the AC for more power.

Today's vehicles do the same thing under WOT, but it's electronically controlled from the throttle position sensor input.
