Anybody remember/seen speedometers from the 1980s. :cautious:
Not sure but think 1.5 ton GMC truck (1948-9?) had 75 on speedo. Don't remember where/if peg was. Been too many years but I think peg was considered RPM "red line" since tach's were almost non existent.

Can't remember but Mav EB's are running similar 0-60's as 80's Z28's and Mustang GT's. Mavs with AWD that is. Not too bad.

I'm driving my Maverick right now and just tried to max it out, but it wouldn't go past 108 mph. I have 255/45/20 tires. I have the 2.0 turbo, front wheel drive, no tow package, and it was in sport mode. Does anyone know why the speedometer goes to 140 if I can only go 108?
Something to which to aspire.

Unless you tune it, there is probably no reason as in many other vehicles. Probably had them lying around. Also gives people that boost in ego who don't know that their MAV's don't go that fast.:D Even with a tune might not hit 125mph if that depending on gear ratio and tire size.

Never seen a car that didn't have a speedo that went to less than 120 ;)
1960’s era military jeeps (Willy’s?) had speedometers that went up to 45, but had graduations to 50. Really scary to bury it!
1972 Datsun 240z read up to 160. But the best I could get out of her was about 137.

Several have already mentioned the tire speed ratings are the reason for the speed limiter on the Maverick (and all cars now days), I believe its correct that auto makers set the limits based on the speed ratings of the OEM tires to keep their customers safe and more importantly avoid product liability lawsuits should a tire fail at speeds exceeding the tire's rated speed.
Tires have these speed rating for a reason. They have been engineered and tested, and received a certified speed rating indicating they should not fail in typical usage due to the high rotational forces related to vehicle speed. Of course that is if the tire is properly inflated and hasn't been damaged by abnormal wear (alignment, balance, worn shocks, etc.), or road hazards.
If you want to go fast, spring for tires with the proper speed rating to stay safe.

108 mph is nothing, kind of sad really that anyone would even talk about "windin' her out"... to one-oh-eight. 😴

If want to experience speed, get a sportbike, take it to 170 on the interstate. That'll wake you up.

I actually welcome that so proper blame is addressed. But if I went 100 miles an hour a month ago and got in an accident tomorrow doing the speed limit, that shouldn't have anything to do with the 100 mile an hour outing, right?
No, it matters in that it is evidence of "avoiding" the law which could be presented in court before the prosecutor asks what other laws were violated. It could sway a juror. Besides some insurance companies offer discounts based on data recorded I do not have any idea how much memory the "black boxes" have but 1 giga bytes of storage would be enough to store at least 30 years data history of your driving.

Hitting governed top speed and engine cutting out.
Nope!
Actually, “pegging” a meter, gauge, etc is doing that which is necessary to make the needle go to its mechanical extreme. That is, the needle, not that which is being measured.

My '14 Focus St 2.0 l turbo passes through 120 mph in fourth gear [with 5 and 6 still to go]. But NOT with me driving!!!

I work for a law enforcement agency. Most of our vehicles are pursuit rated and are top speed limited to the speed rating of the tires. We have a new F150 that is limited to 120 vs 105 or so for non pursuit rated trucks because it uses Kevlar reinforced tires. Some of our old Crown Vics are not limited, but will run out of HP before exceeding the speed rating of the tires.
