Spare wheel size

It's time to replace tires on my '24 Hybrid XLT (going with Mich Defender2-225/65R17). I'd like to save my best "old" tire (OEM ProContact-225/65R17) and use as a spare instead of that less than "full sized spare" Ford marketed to me (215/60R17). Standard wheel size is 17'x7" w/ 5x108 bolt pattern. My question is, what size is the spare wheel holding the oem smaller tire? I know it's 17" diameter with 5x108 bolt pattern, but I don't know if it's 7" wide to accommodate the standard tire size.

Does anyone know what width the spare wheel is or has anyone put their OEM tire on the spare wheel and been done with it?

FYI, keep your old tires, avoid the "waste fee" and then sell them to a used tire shop for $5-$15/ea.

I negotiated a full size spare at purchase. I believe those "donut" tires are a freak wheel size as the tire profile is completely different than your four, on-the-ground tires. I would look for a real full size steely. You will also have a small issue with the under-bed cradle for the spare. The full size tire doesn't want to fit in the pocket because of the toothed gripper toward the front of the truck. You cold grind the teeth down or insert the tire tread into the gripper first and draw the back end of the tire up into the rear of the bed. It's a snug fit but works.

I have what was packaged as "full sized spare" which is significantly bigger than the donut tires you see as spares for some cars. It's a real tire and wheel (215/60R17). What I don't know is if the 17" wheel it comes on has the same width and offset as the 4 wheels the truck rides on. So, since posting, I bought a 17x7, 5x108 wheel from Amazon (Allied 83B = $68.75 - I assume the 35mm offset is close enough to OEM). Russ, your comments made me consider and investigate available space for the spare. OEM spare is 27.16" diameter and I have 7/8"-1" clearance front and back (angled pictures don't show this 100% accurately). This means I can accommodate a tire/wheel combo with a diameter up to a little more than 29". So, my old standard tire (225/65R17) on 17" steelie wheel = 28.52" and should fit. Theory is only theory until it's proven, but these measurements and calculations convinced me to spend the money to put my best old tire on a standard steelie wheel.

Forgive the TurboNerd 3000 spreadsheet; I got carried away. Maybe it helps someone that's considering a similar spare tire mount with other tire sizes. BUT, don't trust me - measure for yourself on your truck before spending $$.

OK, so it took a 68 y/o fat guy to drop his "full size" spare to answer this question. From my 2024 Lariat Tremor. 17" x 7" wheel, 215/60R17 tire.

Measured 28-1/2" from hitch to point(s) of tire-popper. Could not hold camera and tape measure at the same time.

I probably should have mentioned that everything I wrote on putting the full-sized spare into the under-bed recess was less than perfectly executed. First, I have the 68 yr old remark by 4 yrs. It also means doing a two person job while lying on your back and trying to fuss with a mini-crane that leaves you in a bad spot to reach it's handle. Looking back, if any of my "alley" neighbors were watching, it must have been a bit of a clown show. I'll agree, it may well theoretically fit but its awkward at best. Then again, I can't remember my last flat.

I checked, I also have the same Full Service Spare. Personally I don't think I would want a larger spare tire. Trying to wiggle it down passed the tire poppers at 70+ years old while on the side of the road in God knows what type of traffic or weather.
Nor would I want to grind the tire poppers teeth down. They are there for a reason.
Compared to the old donut spares, a full service spare means there are no restrictions on usage. Full service spare is load rated and speed rated same as your regular tires. It really isn't that much smaller.

I would have no problem continuing a road trip with a full service spare until I could get adequate replacements. Depending on how old the tires were on the truck a set of two or a set of four

In less than 2 years you drove that many miles to need new tires? Or did you get poor mileage on the original set?

I have a 1990 Ranger that still has the OEM full size spare under the truck. I took it off one time when it was new. I have over 130K on it it & never used the spare in the last 35 years. (or had a flat)

I have road side assistance/towing on my 2025 Maverick. If I get a flat, I am calling for help. I have had some slow leakers on other vehicles but not a flat in the last 35 years. I always buy four tires at a time.

I have road side assistance/towing on my 2025 Maverick. If I get a flat, I am calling for help. I have had some slow leakers on other vehicles but not a flat in the last 35 years. I always buy four tires at a time.

I’ll make it simple for you. The “full size spare“ rim provided with 22-24 Mavericks is the same rim that comes mounted on XL Mavericks.

The question is "is the 7" XL rim the same width as the XLT & Lariat rims (8"?) and if so how much diameter increase would mounting the 225 tire in the 7" time would be increased by mounting in the XL 7" rim??

The XLT rim is also 7” on 22-24 Mavericks, it’s got the same tires (225/65R17) from the factory as the XL. It’s not hard to figure this stuff out.

I think it's kind of funny. I have another year left on my roadside assistance. Great if you remain around town. Not so good for us rural folks.
A lot of the time when I'm on the road, I don't have cell service and I'm more than 35 miles from a Ford dealer.
On the road I carry a hydraulic jack, tire repair kit, wheel chocks and my compressor/battery jumper
