I just put Bronco Sport wheels on my XL and here is what I had to do to use a factory steelie and 225/65R17 as my spare. There is a bracket to prevent the spare from shifting forward. The space between that bracket and hitch was just slightly too small to fit the full size. (I believe if you don't have a hitch this entire process would be unnecessary)

What I had vs what I wanted.

I gave the bracket a small trim and then filed it smooth and primed/painted.

Finished product

Finished product! I know the paint doesn't match and my beer choices may be questionable, but it fits!
Just to be clear, this is the part you cut off, right?

Yep, just the teeth on the bracket. The bracket is still there to prevent the spare from moving forward.

The 70’s pinto. Ford left out $9.00 in parts to help shave costs from production. One part was to keep the gas tank from exploding in event of rear end collisions. That nine bucks costs lives.
in turn cost ford $128 million in settlements.
y’all still wanna cut off that part for your spare tire?

Oh, I told Discount tire to put my 225/65/17 Pirelli down there and it would not fit without hacking the safety part off. I’m back with the smaller spare now.

In my 50+ years of driving, I have only had a flat two times while on the road. So, I’ll probably leave my XL Hybrid spare the way it is. The most important thing is, and this relates to any spare, check the tire pressure on the spare regularly. One time I needed to use the spare, the pressure was too low to even use the spare.
