But……..
The “noise”, regular as it was, could be heard quite easily out in front, WHILE IN REVERSE.
I don’t believe that it would be as easily heard behind, even as close as 15-20’.
Tomorrow, weather permitting, I’ll investigate further.
Stay tuned……
I mean, it's the same noise it makes going forward under electric I'd assume?

I don't understand why everyone thinks that being able to hear a vehicle moving nearby is only beneficial to those who cannot see. Everyone relies on their hearing to identify objects moving around them.
Don't worry, not everyone thinks that. I'm not even sure very many people think that.

The "What about the blind?" topic usually comes up because some people place the blame for not being aware of an unusually silent car on pedestrian inattention. From what I've seen, a number of those people aren't going to change their view -- for them "It's the pedestrian's fault!"

So it's just easier to sidestep that argument and use the example of the blind person. But most of us recognize that the non-deaf population uses their ears as well as their eyes to maintain situational awareness.

I think I've consciously heard the backup noise twice, and I just made the connection that it was for backing up due to this thread.

Or maybe it's the same noise played the other direction (or other way?),(or backwards),(uh-oh! If you hear it played first while the backing is going on then when you hear it played the other direction when the forward thing is happening will you have doubts about what the "reverse" backing sound means?🤔

Today I noticed for the first time that the backup sound comes from the front. I found that interesting.

I consider the forward-rolling sound kind of like a growl. At first I thought it was the sound of the electric drive, but recently realized the sound was "piped in" for pedestrian safety.

I don't find my Lariat Hybrid reverse sound annoying at all. You can barely hear it

Especially important when you’re in reverse and a pedestrian is obsessed with their cell phone.
I've driven a hybrid for years, but there are situations for ALL of us where we might not be aware of a vehicle backing toward us from an unexpected direction.

There are a ton of distractions in everyday life. Most of them aren't cellphones.

Agreed. I consider it a great feature. Louder would be fine as well.

Reverse beeping noise @ 7m22s
It is interesting that their mic picked up the reverse sound a lot better from the front in the video.
