Hello all,
Just checking to see if anyone else has had a similar problem. I’ve been looking through the forums for the last three or four weeks and cannot find anything similar to our problem.

Our local Ford dealership has been chasing this problem for six weeks (they have had the car more than we have in the last three weeks) On cold starts the vehicle makes a loud rattle near the right front wheel. You can hear it inside the cabin as well. Then as you drive the vehicle and stop at stop signs or stoplights. The vehicle will act like it is trying to leave the light or the stop sign while your foot is on the brake. After the vehicle warms up, it doesn’t seem to be a problem. They have done numerous software updates. They have fully charged the battery. They have replaced a broken roll restrictor motor mount. And nothing has solved the problem.

We had both CV axles replaced under warranty in June. We never noticed this problem until after the axles were changed in June and the problem has continued to get worse. The dealership has told me that they have checked the axles numerous times and everything seems to be correct there.

This is a well known issue, it was discovered not long after the Hybrid Mavericks hit the road in late 2021. I get it on almost every cold start during the cooler months of the year as well. There was a software update for this way back in 2023, but it didn't completely fix it. Ford has never followed up on a fix, or if there is ever going to be one.

I use the brake hold feature, that holds the brakes fully when stopped, so I don't have hold the brake pedal down so hard. It really helps with the surging feel.

My 25 hybrid did this for the first 2 or 3 months I had it (winter last year), then it went away. Maybe a software patch fixed it?

I don’t feel it in the pedal and my rumbling is not quite that loud most of the time, but there are times where I think it’s very loud. My wife hasn’t noticed the noise in the last two or three months but the last couple days she has noticed it and this is her commuter vehicle.
I tried to read back through your post. Did you have your CV axles replaced and then this started happening?

If I can re-create the noise in the morning, I will post a video.

Until we replace the axles in June 2025, we had never had any problems with the vehicle. The noise and the lunging at stoplights and stop signs only started after we had the CV Axles replaced under warranty. And we had about 55,000 miles on the car at that point.

Interesting. I've had this since my truck was new, I've also had the CV axles replaced within the last year, it made no difference.

I get it occasionally. Cold day + cold start = surging forward and rattle/grind. It
Doesn’t happen all the time, but it doesn’t frequently get that cold outside here🤷

Confirmed. We all have the cold start rattle. Just a clunky, cheap part that makes noise but is still operational. You can especially hear it in N gear. When the planetary gears disengage, they rattle, IDK. If it runs and drives, I'm happy.

I wonder - shouldn't lose much tranny fluid when axles are replaced - unless a seal isn't doing great.
But I'd hope they'd check.

While not many moving parts in the hybrid tranny - still needs fluid at correct level.

I have had this problem since new as well, first cold start of the day, stop at light or sign and the engine and vehicle 'pulses' and wants to surge forward - was since NEW and did before I had my CV axles replaced and since were replaced...Icegradner nailed it with his first statement...

Today I had a call from the Ford dealer who has had the car for the last couple of days. They did a transmission fluid change yesterday and didn’t find major problems in the fluid. But noticed that the noise was back today and they pinpointed it in the transmission. My service technician contacted Ford corporate and they told him that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed further which means opening up the transmission which also meets $500 out of my pocket. When this whole disaster started, my vehicle was about 57,000 miles. It is just created 60,000 miles. My local Ford dealership has had the vehicle for approximately 16 days of the last month and a half. I’m not paying a dime to fix this transmission since I brought it to them early on and they couldn’t figure it out. So I will fight tooth and nail. I just wanted to let you guys know what I had found so far when and if I get this resolved, I will also put that out there.

You probably have by now figured out that what you're experiencing is nothing unusual for the hybrid. The lunging goes away after the first time you stop. I put mine in Park which stops it. Some folks use the auto brake. Think I'll try that next time.
