OP sure wants to whine more than solve the problem.

Here's your solution, with extra benefits.

A dashcam - I use this one.
The extra benefit is you'll always be recording front & rear to protect you from other idiots (and liars) on the road.

But here's the deal. Mount it with your license plate area. "Oh but that's not centered." That's okay. These use a very wide angle lens and capture a LOT of area, designed this way. How do I know? I have one mounted on my Jeep's license plate area which is even LESS centered (see pic here - https://kbdbodykits.com/images/productimages/37-6127-10.jpg). And I capture the full view behind me.

The camera also lets you decide if you want to see on screen the full rear, rear in window, etc. But it's recording both in full size.

So yes, there's an option. It's a great one. It's a cheap one (under $100, under $60 right now). But you don't want a solution. You want to whine. So just say so.

THanks - had no idea. I have no affiliation, but have used this one personally. Quality is great.

That's the case with literally every truck that has a backup camera. Idk where you expect them to put it that would allow proper camera views with full use of a tailgate. Seems like a small issue that doesn't warrant any change
Easy solution: a second cam on the upper 'wall' of the tailgate (on edge of left or right side, not in middle) that is activated by the lowered gate.

A cool mod would be to put the Ford logo on a hinge so it tips out when in the lowered position. I might give that a go in the spring.
I would have to imagine that the jostling of the reversing truck / terrain would cause it to swing around like a pendulum, which would then make it freak out every time it sees the ground approaching rapidly? Check out "Rotary viscous dampers" somewhere like McMaster-Carr and use it in tandem with gravity so that you can have the emblem hold vertically without jigglin'.

Hi all,

I have been loving my new Maverick, it has been doing lots of truck work (moving furniture, etc) that could never have happened with our SUV. Also, it has been cold and snowy up here, and the AWD with stock tires has been amazing!

One of my biggest gripes though, is that the backup cam is useless when the tailgate is down and you are in reverse. Worse than that, it sets off the back-up impact warning, because it thinks that you are going to hit the ground (with the camera now aimed directly at the ground).

Has anyone looked at repositioning the backup cam somehow so that it remains functional with the tailgate down?

Thanks for sharing any advice.

I just dont understand where else you put it. My back up cam is worthless on my current vehicle with the trunk open. It just points at the sky.

Great price, but quick question. So if you mount it on the bumper or license plate. Wouldnt the tailgate being down block the upper portion of your view anyway?

Good questions... This has a VERY wide angle lens from all directions.

Here's where it's mounted - VERY farthest outside corner, that tiny little square at the bottom of my license plate area.

And here's what the image looks like in a parking space back to back with another car (upper right is the reverse, rest is the front view) which I guess would be 2-4 feet bumper to bumper? - very clear, very visible details, and you can see the ground, peripheral, etc.

If there IS some restriction from the tailgate, you could still clearly see the ground immediately behind and a lot more visibility than any other method.

Not many Mavs have the back up sensors.

Another Ford mis-step on these.

If you’re really moving heavy furniture, unless you’re Man Mountain Dean, you’re probably not working by yourself. So get your partner to get the hell out and look behind you! Duh!
