  1. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

Just an update. We pulled this trailer for ~4000 miles on a trip to/from New Hampshire and North Dakota. We took the trans Canada for a good part of the route out and tried to stay off the interstate on the way back. MPG ranged from about 10 to 15 depending on conditions (the 10 was a hot head...
  2. GeeWeights and Cat Scales

I just finished up a 4000 mile round trip from New England to North Dakota and back, pulling a SunLite 18RD. It was a great trip (we did manage to trigger the sway control twice - nice to know that works....) The Maverick pulled the trailer just fine and I got between 10mpg (nasty headwind) and...
  3. Towing a 3,204lb (dry weight) Cherokee Wolf Pup 16TS camper -- 2.0 Maverick EcoBoost handled it like a champ!

I have a Sunlite 18rd and have towed it a number of times now. Went with it because it is inexpensive and has a north south queen bed. I got the weigh safe hitch and my tongue weight is ~300lb. I get around 14mpg towing. Chose to go with a straight hitch (not weight distributing) because...
  4. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

I know.. :-) If you buy direct from them, they offer two matching. There is a load of bad press about the hitch locking pins - mostly that they are only good for keeping honest people out. As the lockpickinglawyer shows - not much really stands up to even novices pickers, a pry bar. On the...
  5. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

I just purchased the Weigh Safe Aero Hitch - Adjustable Trailer Hitch Ball Mount - 6" Drop and when it arrived I realized I could have gone with the 4" drop..... I am using about a 2 inch drop. Without water the 18RD is showing about 280lb hitch weight.
  6. Headliner Issues after Side Airbag Recall Replacement

I had my headliner replaced because it was delaminating. When it came back, I was not happy and pushed back. In my case it was a slapdash job - with obvious puckers in the overhead console. And.... the cut along the edge is coming from the factory as ragged not crisp. So got them to redo the...
  7. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

My wife follows a group on Facebook dedicated to the Sunset park trailers. Overall, seems most people are pretty happy. It is an inexpensive (relatively) camper and some of what is shared is the upgrades/tweaks/corrections people do. She is also a member of a small camper group that talks about...
  8. Our Little Travel Trailer (Prolite Escapade) w/ Towing MPG Results

That is impressive gas mileage. I have a similarly heavy trailer (sunlite 18rd) and have been happy with ~15mpg. I suspect the Prolite is more aerodynamic and that is part of the difference. I do cap my speed at 60mph (trailer wheels and all) but there also could be some differences on the...
  9. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

Nice but aprox 2 year waiting list for a build. Mine is slated for spring of 2024. Hence the sunlite 18rd as my intermediate trailer.
  10. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

If you want something higher than an Aliner (and I did look at them....) The Safari Condo retractable roofs are really interesting (and I visted the showroom last summer and the rigs are really neat - but too small for me). I looked hard at them when I originally ordered a hybrid - but changed...
  11. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

My hitch is currently at a 6" drop with stock Maverick and sunlite. That results in a close to ideal level pull.
  12. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

I would agree that this camper is not too heavy or that wind drag is an issue. Would I like it to be more aerodynamic? - yes indeed which is why I have a Safari Condo f2114 on order - bigger but simila weight and more streamlined and over double the cost. The porpoising is really not...
  13. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

I have a Alto f2114 on order (delivery Mar of 2024) and so looking forward to it. I think the more streamlined shape and a similar overall weight will give me a better ride. Cross winds start with a side profile. But the over all weight plays a big part of it too. I have experienced nasty...
  14. Maverick XL spontaneously locking doors.

I have noticed my Maverick getting locked when I did not mean it to enough times to wonder about it. Never with it running as I recall. I know I did not hit the dock lock on the way out because that would take effort. I have been assuming that I just bumped the lock button on the fob in my...
  15. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

I have encountered "turbulence" a number of times in the 4 towing trips I have done so far. The turbulence I noticed is related to trucks and cars though. The most surprising to me is the SUVs passing me - as some (but not all) will have a bow shock that wiggles the trailer. Not wiggles enough...
  16. An article on the brake recall for towing.

When I talked to the service tech - I explicitly asked if it was a software only (because of the part mentioned, and yes I originally thought it was s/w only). She said there was indeed a part that had just arrived and was ready for install. So... will ask about it again when I take it in next...
  17. An article on the brake recall for towing.

FYI - Several months ago, was told the 4k towing recall was "on hold" due to issues with the display (as in the gain adjustment would no longer show). Late last week, I checked again, and they said it was 'off hold' and they could now order the part needed (used to be just a software update)...
  18. 4K Tow Recall

FYI - Several months ago, was told the 4k towing recall was "on hold" due to issues with the display (as in the gain adjustment would no longer show). Late last week, I checked again, and they said it was 'off hold' and they could now order the part needed (used to be just a software update)...
  19. Towing a nice little camper trailer - Sun Lite 18RD

The issue I noticed when reading about 5th wheels is the short bed. (Beyond the weight limit). I did not dig into it, but is seems you need the right hitch which you unlock so that it "slides/moves" to allow tight cornering when positioning the trailer.
  20. Extended towing mirrors for the Maverick ?

Anyone with experience on adding towing mirrors? I see more than a few "clip on style" on amazon, but none really give me much confidence based on the ratings. and of course will they actually make a difference ? My trailer is 90" wide, the Maverick (incl the mirrors) is 83.5 so in theory a...
