Hi all,

I have been loving my new Maverick, it has been doing lots of truck work (moving furniture, etc) that could never have happened with our SUV. Also, it has been cold and snowy up here, and the AWD with stock tires has been amazing!

One of my biggest gripes though, is that the backup cam is useless when the tailgate is down and you are in reverse. Worse than that, it sets off the back-up impact warning, because it thinks that you are going to hit the ground (with the camera now aimed directly at the ground).

Has anyone looked at repositioning the backup cam somehow so that it remains functional with the tailgate down?

Thanks for sharing any advice.

Use the mirrors. That is what everyone who owns a Truck does.

I doubt this is going to be a big part of my life, but is this an audible alarm? The first time I hear it, I want to be ready for that.

That's the case with literally every truck that has a backup camera. Idk where you expect them to put it that would allow proper camera views with full use of a tailgate. Seems like a small issue that doesn't warrant any change

A cool mod would be to put the Ford logo on a hinge so it tips out when in the lowered position. I might give that a go in the spring.
This is a fantastic idea, having a hinge that pops out the backup cam when the tailgate is down would be incredible! I might try that myself.

Depends on trim I think. I have an XLT 4K FX4 and do not have this sensor.
Seems if they would of thought more about this, not the first pickup ever built. They should have put camera on the bumper so it would work even if tail gate is down. Yes, of course you can use the mirror and should, but it would be nice when you have something long and hard to maneuver in the bed of your truck to be able to use the camera to verify clearance of objects be hind you.

This is my first backup camera on a truck. I use my mirrors but I like the feature. I do know now why people all of the sudden started boxing be in on my street in the last few years, however! It takes some time to figure out the distance and leave enough space for the car behind you.

As someone else mentioned, isn't this an issue with every truck? Why couldn't you put tape over the camera when the tailgate is down? I don't have my truck so I can't try it.

Not every. The big boys often have multiple cameras such as in the third brake light to supplement when the tailgate is down, but that's the difference between a 20-30k economy truck and spending 40k+ on a full-size.

Look at all the fanboys jumping all over this OP simply because he made a simple gripe comment about a legit issue.

I did not know that. Mainly because the big boys are out of my price range and the fact that my last truck was a 1994 or 95 S10 and my first vehicle with a backup camera was a 2016 Ford Escape. Thank you for letting me know.
