"Pickup" vs "Truck"

It seems there is a contention in car communities as to what what a "truck" is. What is your definition of a truck, and does the Maverick fit the definition?

It looks the part, I'd call it a truck. Don't care about it's tow capacity, or whether or not it's a unibody or cab on frame, etc.

The EPA by CAFE standards will also consider it a light duty truck. So I guess it's a truck

Its a pickup. All pickups are a truck but all trucks aren't a pickup. Growing up, if my grandfather told be to bring the pickup around and I brought the 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck around he would give me the "You idiot look" The pickup was used to go "pickup" smaller items at the grocery store or feed store or go pick up a family member.

It's whatever you want it to be. It doesn't even have to look like a truck, if you use like like a truck then I guess you think it's a truck. Probably photoshopped but I'd guess this owner, mythical or not, thinks it's a truck:

It is in the hands of your states dmv usually a truck is of a gvw in excess of 6500 lbs etc lite vehicles weigh less and typically have an open box in back but again it’s your states dmv and is normally based on your VIN, in California it’s weirder

If the Baja can be considered a truck this most definitely is. This is wider, longer, and has more bed options.

I have a very scientific way of determining "What is a truck?"

If my wife was going to get some mulch for her garden, would I point at the Maverick and say:
(A)"Take my truck."
(B) "Take my car."

Answer: (A) --- So... it's a truck.

My wife taunted me mercilessly when I drove a 4Runner. I called it a truck. She called it my SUV. I wonder what she will call the Maverick?

My buddy is restoring an f450 S hook with a Cummins diesel. He says, "You'all drive pickups. Call me when you need a real truck." And I do.

It would be great if the Maverick is classified as a crossover here. Passenger vehicle tags are about 1/3 less. We'll see.
