Next gen Maverick should include a pass through from the bed to the back of the cab with the back seats folded down. The unibody of the Maverick makes this possible. I know it would take some engineering to move the audio equipment from the back of the rear seats but that’s what engineers are paid the “big bucks” for.

Ford built the Maverick for the average hobby type owner. To build one the why you mention, would be more then just an upgrade. Does any manufacture build a truck with a pass thru from the bed, to the cabin? Also it's easier to replace a bed from a rear collision, then to total the whole truck.

Yes there are trucks with bed pass throughs. And there are more of them coming. Unibody construction allows it. BEV makes it even easier. It's a no brainer to give customers more functionality in a smaller footprint. Also frunks in BEV trucks are brilliant.

Of course, the Neanderthal knuckle draggers will hate it, but they hate everything. And they'll also invent bogus arguments out of thin air, trying to convince everyone that a good idea is a bad idea.

It will depend upon the price point. We had one member who just had his Maverick totaled from a t-bone crash. He decided to purchase an F-150, due to the Maverick becoming too expensive for what you get. In his opinion.

I always wondered how they prevent the backdraft of exhaust fumes into the cabin on those Silverados? On station wagons and hatchbacks you aren't supposed to drive with the hatch open because carbon monoxide can get pulled into the cabin 🤔

It would make sense for an all-electric truck, but then again it's such a niche thing ... you can't use it if it's raining, or snowing, or too cold or too hot out, and you can't have anyone in the back ...

When I have to carry long stuff (a couple of sticks of lumber or some lengths of pipe) I use my Camry which has 60:40 folding back seat and can fit 10' lengths with the trunk closed - even if I have a rear passenger!

Huh? What do you mean you can't use them when it's raining, snow, too hot/cold 🧐 it might not be the most comfortable, if it's open to the elements, but they also talk about a topper, which would effectively seal out the elements with the tailgate up...making it sorta SUV-ish

The Chevrolet Avalanche was a truck with a pass through from the cabin to the bed via a “midgate.” If you folded down the back seats, the midgate would fold inward and lay flat on top of them, creating a seamless pass through to the bed. The Avalanche also came with a three-panel hard bed cover and each panel could be removed independently. Using the midgate and the bed cover would give you a full 8’ of enclosed bed space. Or you could turn two knobs and remove the rear window, snap it into the midgate, and take off the three bed panels and have the full cab open to the bed, with the pass through being big enough to fit a couch through. It was awesome, I owned one for 17 years before buying my Maverick and I never had a problem with exhaust fumes entering the cabin, regardless of whether the midgate was open or closed. I believe this technology is now being utilized on the new electric Silverado. Would LOVE to see it offered on the Maverick.

The Avalanche, while sharing much of the body with the Tahoe/Suburban body was not a unibody. It had a full frame underneath which was derived from the Silverado pickup trucks. The bed was integrated with the body.
A unibody integrates frame structure into the body but you can't unbolt it the way you technically could with the Avalanche.

I was gonna say.

"Unibody" is not a prerequisite to having a pass through mid-gate.

I think it makes a lot if sense on short bed trucks.

There have been a dozen times my Maverick was just an inch or two or six short for my needs.

The Maverick is built as inexpensively as possible and because of that It was probably investigated but packaging and other factors most likely preempted the possibility of the first generation of this truck having a mid gate. I am not smarter than the engineers but for the price point of this trucket it is fine.

I remember the early generations of the Toyota pickups, I had one a 1978 that I drove into the ground and never wanted anything larger and ended up driving the truck 490,000 over a 25 year period. That truck was also built on the cheap and it preformed and I never wanted for a mid gate it would have been nice as a option but really for the price point I don't see it happening.

My mother got a new '72 Chevy van, just before the van craze.

The windows on the rear doors were hinged on the top, and opened at the bottom, just like the side windows.

We were quickly warned not to open them while driving, as they'd draw the exhaust back in.

And the AC on that thing wasn't enough to reach the second bench where my brother and I sat, leaving the little ones in the first bench where she could get to them.

A couple of months ago, I saw a cadillac (late 30s?) listed for sale. A series 75 (limo chassis) roadster (two seats & convertible top). The trunk was ridiculously deep--12 ft, iirc!

Unless they were modified, trucks, vans and station wagons had side exiting exhaust.

On a unibody the sheet metal is a structural component. If you open the back wall then you reduce the twisting stiffness of the truck a lot. The audio equipment location is not the reason why you would not want to do this change.

The wife was lightly "tapped" by an F150 spinning after it made a left turn while she was stopped at a red light. Damage was limited to driver's side rear fender and supporting brackets, tail light, very small paint chip on edge of rear door, the rear plastic bumper cover. Tire was bruised on sidewall so tire was replaced but rim was measured an not damaged. The rear crash bar was touched and the very end was about 3/8" out of straight. NO INTERIOR DAMAGE TO BED, however something was welded which required bedliner respray. ($699+towing to/from spray shop $725). All work done per Ford specs including computer checks before and after to verify no new error codes. Repair was $12,722.41 plus six weeks car rental plus $2,140.00 diminished value. So anything that dings the bed also will most likely total the Maverick. Also note that the bolts on the fuel filler assembly are one time use and apparently not individually available requiring a new assembly.
