I've always stopped at the click unless I know for a fact the click was too soon. Then again, I last put gas in my Maverick on June 13.

There might be something to this. Took the family to Disney two weeks ago, and before we drove into Orlando, I topped off the tank in the Expedition where gas was cheaper. We then parked the Expedition in the Florida sun for a week without moving it. As we were driving out of Orlando, the engine light kicked on, telling me there was a fault with the evaporative emission vapor blocking valve. By the time we got home, the issue went away.

My theory was that we topped off the tank and then parked a black Expedition in the sun for a week, which confused the sensor once we started driving again. So, I can see the thrust of the article having some weight to it.

Well see that is a nice difference with the Maverick perhaps.
It will only test those EVAP system when 30-to 85% full.
So if full - no possible complaints since no testing!

I think I read somewhere that the click-off is controlled by a little thingie at the end of the pump nozzle that makes the fuel foamy. And once the foamy hits the nozzle, it acts like a back flush and stops the pump. So in theory, fast flowing pumps will create more foamy thus shut off sooner.

To test, I did the fast flow and it took a good 10 clicks with a 5 second wait in between before I started seeing liquid coming out. At the next fill up, I did the slow flow (1st step on auto-hold) and after 2 clicks it started to overflow.

Then, I did both a fast flow and slow flow with no clicks. The difference? About 75 miles less compared to the top off.

To be fair all cars have been testing EVAP this way for like 30 years almost. It's pointless to test a full tank because there's not sufficient volume for evaporation, and with a nearly empty tank it's too hard to be accurate. I suspect his issue was something else and will likely come back at some point.

I always let it click once then squirt one more shot into the tank (like literally just me clicking the handle in for 1 second and releasing). Certainly shouldn't ever cause issues but gives me that extra half mile I guess...

Obviously none of you live in Jersey.
We don't pump our own.
If paying cash, they round up to the next dollar.
Old enough to remember when all gas stations had someone pumping the gas for you. I would never allow them to pump gas in either my hot rod or my motorcycle. They would inevitably spill gas on your bike tank or rear quarter.

I'm willing to bet the bikers especially have a big issue with that law in Jersey.

There is a station where I live in central Alabama that offers full service. The cost of the service is built into the gas price at the pump. They also offer regular self-service pumps.

Even in the cow counties?
(Now that I think of it, it's been some years since I've been in any Nevada county besides clark; I'm either going to Northern California or southern Arizona
Nope, here in Nye, Esmeralda and White Pine counties the gas nozzles are still bare azz naked.😌

after the first shut off. I go to the next quarter of a dollar. Sometimes it's 2¢, sometimes 24¢. That is less than a 1/20th of a gallon.

Geez take a powder.
