My Maverick is in the body shop and I temporarily have a new Tacoma.

Strangely enough, I miss the dial shifter. The controls are harder to figure out, the engine is noiser and buzzy. The ride is bouncy and it's a gas hog compared to my 2.0 awd 4k tow.

Looking forward to getting my Mav back

Yep Maverick is better than Tacoma in every respect aside from Bro-ishness.

Even the new Tacos will be bigger, much heavier (700 pounds or so) slower and much worse gas mileage than the EcoBoost let alone the hybrid.

Not a fanboy. The bros can have them.

Twenty years from now, the Taco will be running. Parts of the Ford will have been melted down (the parts that didn't just rust away into dust) and re-cycled into KIAs. Rust In Peace.
I had a Toyota pickup before and it had a couple of issues but the 22R engine was Great. The reason I had to get rid of it was the frame rusted through to the point where it was sagging and creeking while I was driving. I got rear ended on rt 80 in Indiana by a little Dodge Neon and the rusty step bumper went flying off (calculated cushioning? ). Twenty years from now I'll bet the Tacoma WILL be running great but I'm not willing to bet on the rest of it. I'm trading the 2.0 in on a hybrid and hopefully it will be running 20 years from now. Getting rust protection first thing.

Funnily enough I had 2 Rangers, one with 744K on it. I also had a Toyota with that 20R engine, and I think that the German 2.8 Ranger engine was superior in almost every way. I drive a Mav hybrid now, and expect it to hit at least 300k before anything serious happens. It also fits in the garage like my Rangers did, and unlike the Taco. Since I live in the salt-belt, all of my vehicles are soft-undercoated, so I've never experienced a rusted-out frame.

All car makers outsource various components from third party suppliers. The good ones monitor and approve those processes to ensure the quality of those parts. Once approved they then test those parts to assure they meet standards. Obviously toyota didn't care enough to spec the materials and processes then rigorously corrosion test those frames and got bit. Absolving toyota through a blame game is ridiculous.

Reuters
"Toyota and Dana negotiated a 70/30 liability split - Toyota was 70% at fault and Dana 30% at fault (i.e. total cost of the campaign was around $85 million). Dana's share was $25M
Toyota accounted for up 6 percent of Dana's sales from continuing operations that year, topped only by Ford Motor Co at 20 percent."

Somehow the Fords (and others) didn't rust out.

I guess the only way to find out if Ford would do the same would be for them to whip it out and stomp on it.

OP, when you say they let you borrow a "new" Tacoma, exactly what is new? What model year? The all-new 2024 based on the Tundra platform, or something earlier?
