I am shopping for a mid size or small truck. I have a full size F150 4x4, old, paid off. I want something smaller, more fun, and better on gas. I want something good in the sand, gravel, and fire roads. No major rock crawling or any extreme mud, etc. Has anyone shopped and compared the Maverick variants against the Tacoma with the rear locker? How does the ground clearance and general capability compare? I am also looking at a Jeep Gladiator too, but its just different...I like the idea of the Maverick!

For what you want to do any of the 3 would work.
The Maverick hybrid is only 2WD but the 2024 Tacoma hybrid can come with 4WD.
The Tacoma costs more but it is more capable.
Of the Mavericks only the Tremor has the locking rear differential like the TRD off road does.

Partly it comes down to how much you want to spend?

Also a factor is that Mavericks are sold out so you may not be able to get one even if you want one. Some orders are taking over a year to come. But I got a Tremor is less then 6 months.
You cant even order a Maverick right now.

Do a test drive in each.
The Maverick is better on road, drives like a car, easy to get in to.

I was surprised you suggested a Gladiator, it is really a different class, I have a friend with one and it can do the off road rock crawling that the others cant but the gas MPG is bad unless you get the diesel and the cost is a lot more. His Gladiator was 20k more then my Maverick.

I am happy with the Maverick Tremor. on road it is perfect, off road it is working but could use better skid plates can a little more ground clearance. But I am taking it on more difficult trails than you describe.

I have a disabled parent who cant get into a tall vehicle or a low vehicle, so none of the other trucks are even an option for me. Wife likes driving the Maverick too.

It sounds like a Maverick Tremor would be good for you, the order banks should open some time soon, get your order in fast because they may close after only a week like they did last year.

Seems like a strong case for an AWD Mav with the Falken tire upgrade. Pending your budget, maybe FX4 & 4K.

Your other choices are overkill based on your list, and are not "better on gas". But again, your budget, your choice.

Good luck. 🤠

Ya I am thinking ordering a Maverick Tremor in July might be the ticket for me too. The Maverick fits well within my budget, assuming I can actually find one at MSRP! Thank you!

I got it for MSRP so it can be done, I went to 4 dealers and 2 had markups and 2 did not.

The Tremor suspension is great on and off pavement. The Tremor option is not constrained so it will not hold up your order.

FX4 and Tremor are both good for forest service roads. They are both significantly less capable offroad trucks than other midsizes except for the Ridgeline.

It’s all opinions and your choices, but if’s you are comparing a Jeep gladiator into the mix🤷‍♂️ I love my maverick works for me but I know the new ranger is definitely more capable off road and cheaper/better fuel economy than the taco is however everyone I know that bought the Toyota loves them too.

A Gladiator is a convertible, doors off truck, that is the main reason why it is in the mix too.

While this is accurate it isn’t exactly true. So much of it comes down to dealer allocations. I ordered a tremor with no constraints last September. It’s never been close to getting built.

I have a fx4 4k tow package maverick 2022 AWD. Falken wildpeak tires. I’ve taken it through snow and sand and it handles wonderful in both. It also has settings for both but I just do traction control off. For what you are describing, it’s all you need and can do more. When watching what tires are engaging in the AWD system it’s pretty intuitive I didn’t feel any slip in the snow. This thing was built for sand

That is going to be a tough decision. Tremor vs FX4+4k.

Order one of each and just keep whichever one gets built first...or simply gets built.

Good point. I guess I would have to go to different dealers and pay the $500 at each to place an order?

I'm not sure if you would have to go to 2 different dealers, but that would probably increase your chances due to the number of allocations. From what I understand about all of the numbers, your best bet is getting g a Tremor built. Definitely try to find a knowledgeable salesman. They can help walk you through it.

A Tremor and skip the stuff that would cause delays, like spray in bedliner?
