When parking Maverick (on level surface), shifting from "DRIVE" to 'PARK'. Once in 'PARK' and removing foot off brake petal; the trucks rolls backward approximately one foot. Has anyone else experience this issue?

Keeping your foot on the brake, and using the parking brake solves this, it takes a few seconds for the truck to change gears. Kind of normal for an automatic transmission anyway.

  • Hold the brake pedal and put the shifter in Neutral.
  • While still holding the brake pedal, pull up on the parking brake lever to engage the parking brake.
  • Lastly, put the shifter in Park.

I do the same thing, especially on a slope/hill. The only thing I do different, is I take my foot off the brake. Allowing the truck to rest on the parking brake instead of the parking pawl.
It doesn't hurt anything.
I was wondering how many others do the above.

Yes, same here - when parking on an incline in all my vehicles I engage the parking brake first, take my foot off the brake pedal to insure the parking brake will hold, then shift into Park. Prolongs the life of the auto trans is what I was told.

That's some oldschool advice from pre-90's when automatics had flimsy pawls/teeth.

The parking gear has pretty large teeth so the vehicle will roll a little bit until the parking pawl engages one of the teeth.

For the OP, one foot of movement is a lot ...
What I usually do is slowly brake getting into parking spot and keep foot on brake, engage parking brake, wait a sec then put into Park.
Learned my lesson.
Had a car yeeeeaars ago that I put into park on an incline and could not get it to shift out of it. Had to get a couple of guy to rock it out of park.

YES, definitely old school advice but other than fluid and filter changes [if so equipped] I have never had to rebuild automatic trannys in any of my vehicles.

Yes! I experienced this recently hooking a trailer up. Got out after it was lined up only to find it wasn't! My dodges don't do this. After this happening several times I used the electronic parking brake to solve the issue.

In between steps 2 and 3 I release my foot to put the weight on the parking brake and re-engage the brake pedal.

The vehicle may roll a few inches, but a foot is not normal.
