First post here - be gentle! 2025 LT, AWD Hybrid. A little background: My wife and I are birdwatchers. We often drive along backroads, scanning the roadsides - trying to be as silent and slow as possible in order to not spook animals (Birds!). The Maverick is perfect for that - AWD for the backroads and the electric side of hybrid for the stealth. I had an event in the Mav yesterday that was neither silent nor enjoyable.

Coasting along very slowly - maybe 2 to 3 MPH - with the AC fans on and the slight hum of the hybrid motor, I decided that I wanted to simply coast along the dirt road for a short distance. Maybe to a slow stop. Shifting into Neutral was the natural method. I shifted into Neutral and coasted a short distance as desired but, the fan motor continued to whine so I - mostly unconsciously - turned the key off! Thinking we'd coast along in silence - maybe losing power steering and power brakes but knowing I could still control the vehicle fine. Now ... one of things I actually like about the Mav was not needing to shift into Park when you "park" and remove the key - the electronics shift it into park without the driver needing to. I guess I thought that the electronics would know that the vehicle was still moving.

Well, the Maverick let me know pretty quickly the error of my poor logic. After turning the key off, within a second, it automatically shifted into Park and with a solid bang and jolt of mechanics (Park Locking Pin?), we came to a rather jarring and loud stop! It certainly got my attention. Even at very slow speeds, it is incredibly jarring, loud and physical a dead stop feels! I did not and will not attempt to repeat that experiment - once was enough. I also assume that the design of the vehicle is to do exactly what I did.

So - for the forum - Is my assumption on the designed operation correct? Did I possibly do any damage? Could I have? Any other options to coast along in silence without turning the key off?

That does indeed happen.

Posters have shared that at higher speeds - the system knows the accidental turn into Park or Reverse better not be done literally, so it doesn't.

I don't recall comments about a dash warning, but I'm guessing there was or how would they know they accidentally did it, or it went back to Drive automatically.

For some odd reason - no one seems interested in testing at what speed it will allow the Park and do it.

Damage?
Since there is no physical connection to the parking pawl, I'd be curious if there is a hard brake stop actually done first, and then engagement of the pawl.
Again - I'm not willing to test to see if scanner log file shows brake pressure in an instant.
That would be smarter. Doesn't mean it was done though.

No other options sadly.
But arriving on stretch of level road with HVB charged to max, HVAC system off, not a hot engine needing fans. So you need a stretch of downhill road to the one you want, so HVB is recharged, and ICE cools down.
Still going to get the slow speed sound to warn other bird watchers hiding just off road you don't see.

It's working as designed. I believe the speed to be 4 or 5 mph for the limit, which is generally considered as walking speed.

When the rotary shift came out, it was possible to shut the vehicle off and leave it in gear and walk away. The vehicle could roll off as not in park.

At least you were on a dirt road. It would have been even more jarring on a pavement surface.

I was searching for an undocumented grave in Madisonville, Kentucky in the middle of March (last month). I have a bad leg so I set in the Mav and used high powered Minolta binoculars to read the markers before getting out and checking. I was doing 2-3 MPH, sometimes with the door open. I spent 8 hours at the cemetery over 2 days. Imagine my surprise when I read this post since my vehicle never went into park and started to roll away a couple of times when I started to get out. My 2024 Lariat has always behaved this way. I'm OK with this but I'm concerned if someone drives it (tech at dealership) and expects it to go into park. Just letting you know that computers can't be trusted. For me, it's a personal problem, I'll figure it out.

Was your engine running?
Bear in mind the OP has a Hybrid.

Aha, didn't catch that. I was looking for an army buddy who was KIA and the cemetery didn't keep records for 30 years so I did everything imaginable in those 8 hours. Scenario: Hybrid guy gets in my 2024 EcoBoost........... thanx for catching the difference.

Opening the door and it going into park depends on whether your seatbelt is on or not.

I got in the habit of opening my door and grabbing something from my locker as I left work, no seatbelt goes into park.

I found out one day when I stopped for something in the road. I opened the door then took off my seatbelt. That’s when I found out the vehicle doesn’t go into park.

I will add to this, if you are in park and have the door open already, then you can put it into drive and move with the door open.

Maverick Automatic Return to Park (ARP) Feature
(from the Maverick Service Manual)
"NOTE: This feature does not operate when your vehicle is in Stay In Neutral Mode or Neutral Tow.
The vehicle has a safety feature that will automatically shift the transmission into P when one of the following conditions are met at low speed:
•The ignition is turned off and vehicle falls below low speed threshold
•The driver door is opened with the seat belt unlatched
•Unlatching the safety belt while the driver door is open
Stay in Neutral Mode
If necessary for the vehicle to stay in N without the driver present, such as being pulled through a car wash, this mode disables Return to Park. In Stay in Neutral the system will remain awake draining the battery if the engine is off. When you enter neutral at low speed a message will be displayed stating press the S button to stay in neutral mode. Then, if the driver presses the S button within the time limit, the message Stay in Neutral Mode appears on the multifunction display. During this mode the N position on the GSM flashes continuously and the instrument cluster will display N as the selected gear. To exit the Stay in Neutral Mode, shift out of neutral.
If the battery discharges while in Stay in Neutral Mode, the Park Lock Pawl Solenoid will release and transmission will return to Park. Do not tow the vehicle in this mode.
Manual Park Release
Refer to: Transmission Park by Wire Manual Release (307-05B Automatic Transmission External Controls - 8- Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35, General Procedures) .
for information on moving the transmission into N with the engine off or with a vehicle that will not crank.
Return to Park
NOTE: This feature may not work properly if the door ajar switch is malfunctioning.
The vehicle will return to P when any of the following conditions are met:
•The vehicle is turned off.
•The vehicle is stopped and the driver door is open with the safety belt unlatched.
•The vehicle is stopped and the safety belt is unlatched with the driver door opened.
If the vehicle is turned off while moving, the transmission will first shift into N until it comes to a complete stop and then will shift into P automatically."

"That's a whole lot of logic to monitor Auto Park, but necessary for safety.
I can't replicate the problem sitting in the driveway. At the cemetery, I had Mav in neutral a lot. I had my right thigh sitting on the edge of the seat, both cheeks sitting on the edge of the seat, coasted in neutral while scanning with binoculars, all types of scenarios. One time, I slid off the seat to scan around the door pillar and blueboy started to roll away which was alarming. I jumped in and started it and kept the engine idling as I scanned for over an hour. I don't like idling for extended periods of time but on this occasion it was necessary. Probably an anomaly? :sadface:If I catch it again and find any rhyme or reason for it, I will post it.

Put it in Neutral then push the L button. It will coast until it stops or until either 30 minutes or the 12v battery voltage drop to the battery save level (11.9 or 12.1 I don't remember). The ice should not start until the HVB DROPS TO 30% SOC. Opening door MAY set Park, not sure. Ice running or not neutral with L pushed will allow exiting truck without setting park.

Worked as designed. It's a safety feature, probably mandated by fed law.

This. Even if not mandated by federal law, it sure does save Ford a lot potential lawsuit time and money. They don't want a repeat of what happened to actor Anton Yelchin.
