The word is out - Carmax can't give away maverick hybirds - might as well trade them and avoid the next 50 recalls

Pulled out of the driveway and went about a block and the truck started dinging and the dash display started to go haywire.

The first warning was "passenger sensor blocked". I've seen this before because I keep a lot of stuff in the passenger seat and it's no big deal to me. Then the fun began.

Then I got the message about the pre-collision assist not available (which I've seen before when there is moisture on the windshield). Then the warnings on the dash started popping up quicker than I could clear them. I got the service engine soon, followed by power train malfunction and then it said that the transmission was in low and the "D" on the shift knob was flashing. I pulled over and the parking brake engaged before I even stopped (with a warning on the dash informing me of this). I immediately shut the truck off, pulled the key, and opened the door to shut it down completely.

When I restarted the truck, all of the warnings started marching across the display. Since I was only two blocks from home, I decided to get it back to my driveway and hook up the OBDII reader when it gets light out.

The thing that really bothered me was that when I drove the two blocks to get home, I had to ride the brakes the whole way. If I took my foot off the brakes pedal, the truck would accelerate. Got it home and I'm going to get the OBDII codes when it gets light out.

I will follow up as more information becomes available. I will call my dealership when they open at 9:00.
I had a similar freak-out the first month I had mine. Dealer found a single wire that was chafing against a metal edge under the hood. Replaced/rerouted the wire and it has been solid ever since. I wish I had more detail about where exactly the chafing happened, but maybe this will help in the investigation.

Got the truck back from the dealer. They could not replicate the issue. :( They also said that they have not heard of this issue with anyone else in Wichita, KS

Did they see the error codes? This is so scary and could be dangerous for all of us!

Yesterday I experienced the same issue, except I got in the truck and drove a friend an hour away. After dropping him off and turning around I was going 50mph when a majority of what you expressed occured. It said I was in the wrong gear, it gave pre-collision warnings, it flashed a half dozen different error messages and I lost acceleration power entirely. I was thankfully able to pull over at an off ramp but the errors remained. Thankfully the hybrid's electric motor allowed me to limp at 5mph a quarter mile away to a gas station where I could safely wait for a tow. Because Ford's car service would tow my car but not give me a ride I used AAA to get towed an hour away back home to the dealer.

Regardless of the disaster of the situation they didn't have an open appointment for me for 2 days. So they won't look at it until tomorrow.

I did have the Ford mobile service come out 2 weeks ago to do the software recall updates.

Other than you being near home when it happened our stories align almost down to the day and hour.

Up until yesterday I would rave about my Maverick despite some hiccups. I can shrug off a variety of hardware recalls but killing my power mid-drive and leaving me stranded with incoherent software problems is NOT ok.

They saw the history of the code - but not the cause. I even gave them the code.

Update from dealer:
They have finished doing a "pinpoint test" and said the ISC and PCM modules need to be reprogrammed and they will contact me when finished. Not getting my hopes up too much right now, but it sounds like they may know what they're doing.

I've done NO RECALL WORK in the past 9 months.

Today, that reminder chime for when you open the door and leave your keys in the ignition started going off and won't quit any time the door is open.

No keys for miles.
No headlamps on.
No hood ajar.

"Reminder" chime won't stop if the door is open. Luckily does stop while driving.

UPDATE: Dealer just delivered my vehicle to my house. They reprogramed the modules, checked the reload, and truck drove fine and cleared the codes. Let's see if they were successful. Definitely will keep an eye on it.

Happened to me. Truck spent two weeks at the dealer getting a new PCR. Request a loaner.
you got a new.. what? never heard of a PCR and Google finds nothing relevant, either.

I just got an update from my dealer. The alerts are gone, the errors are cleared, the car works just fine, they have no idea what happened or how to reproduce it. They will keep the truck to drive it in hopes of it happens again.

@Ford Motor Company - Aside from this happening at all being unacceptable, how is it possible that this truck can have such a critical failure and capture nearly zero error logs of the event to give even a slim chance of a proper diagnosis? How can a car that lives and dies on good software not have protocols to capture logs of these failures? Simply taking my car home because it works now and hoping it doesn't die on the highway an hour away from home again is not an option. I bought my first new vehicle here to have something reliable. The dealer says they have received no top-down software input from Ford about this issue.

Well, if all they did was let your truck sit around for a day or too the codes would probably clear and your Maverick would drive fine with the dealer doing nothing. I'm more curious what needing to "reprogram modules" means and how it is the Achilles heel of the whole vehicle. Why did they need to be reprogrammed and at what point did someone fail to do it before?

I haven't had any of the software updates done yet. What I find interesting is now when I check my open recalls the "reprogram powertrain control module" says remedy not yet available. So seems Ford has stopped that update until they have a fix.

I'm not that surprised, as there really aren't that many hybrid Mavericks in Wichita yet, that I have seen.

Which dealership?

Mel Hambelton. I am not criticizing them, they did everything they could to try to replicate. Just surprised I am the only one so far....
