The Mavs do seem to be rear-end magnets don't they? I'm hoping that collision avoidance braking systems help out with the epidemic of people not paying attention to what's in front of them.

WOW. That's insane. It's like a small bump to the rear total's these trucks. NUTS.

I just watched a video about how EV's and hybrids need a circuit that puts on the brake lights when the vehicle is decelerating. Some can pretty aggressively slow without any warning to the car behind.

Most of my life my main means of transportation has been on two wheels. So I look as far ahead of the vehicles that are ahead of me when there are any so I am actually prepared to react before they are. Also constantly scanning mirrors and being aware of what is around me. My primary response to any obstacle is to go around, hitting the brakes for me is the last resort and is something that I have very rarely had to do. If I do have to brake I already know when my vehicle will stop so I instantly look in the mirror to see if the vehicle behind me is braking or not, you can tell, and if not then once again try and find an escape route to get out of its way. I have over a million miles on two wheels and probably over 3 million on 4 or more wheels. 70 years old never been rear ended, not saying there were never any close calls, but my procedure has always saved the day.

So sorry for your loss, very sad.

I just got the word: Officially totaled :(
What the Heck?

It isn't the bumper and tailgate, it's the stress mark in the "frame". Boron steel is un-repairable, all of the back of the truck is spot welded to it including 1/2 the cab. It is very hard on the bits to drill out the spot welds, and has to be re-spot-welded correctly or the steel around the weld can tear out if gets too hot.

If my math is correct, It cost me over $6000 to drive it 3.5 months, because someone else wasn't paying attention. I had used the brake pedal to slow so it wasn't lack of brake lights either, in fact I had an add-on strip on the lower edge of the tailgate AND on either side of the 3rd brake light because of all the other posts on here about rear-enders totaling the truck.

Yeah I saw the tailgate involved. But a bent tailgate generally doesn't total the vehicle.

Apparently the materials used are designed to be thrown away, well in the event of adversity, designed to be thrown away.

Best of luck to everybody on their vehicle choice or future purchases!

I think it will help, just not in all cases. It will depend on their level of inattentiveness.
A rear facing very directional horn tied to brake lights, timed so it's not constant blare from the time you put on brakes, but rather every half-second or sec perhaps?
Until stopped moving then it stops. So tied to VSS somehow. hmmm.

Of course if they are on phone and music is blaring...
Ya - can only do so much.

Ya gone are the days of manual down-shift when slowing for like a corner or such.
But my RAV4 coasts worse than Mav and it's never had a brake light come on when doing so.
Mav is pretty slippery even when not in that mode.
Eco and manually engaging L sure.

But I'm betting people not watching enough to discern change of speed and closing the gap, won't see it even if brake light was on. Their brain is on other things.
I've watched that right in front of me constantly, which causes me to slow more, cause I can tell the goof-ball in front of me can't see what's happening right in front of them!

Dang that sucks. I had a minor rear end collision a couple months ago and it was *only* in the 7k to 8k range to take care of it. We need those reactive armor panels like they put on the Bradley's on our rear bumpers.

Putco LED Tail lights, Putco tailgate light bar, spare tire brake light, LED third brake light, red halo in cube reverse lights tied to brake lights, and sequencing amber LED turn signal did not keep my Jeep from being rear-ended while waiting to turn left.

Best of luck with your repairs!

Pulsing lights don't work. study
Brighter causes glare and may impair vision at night.

Strobing lights may actually result in target fixation.

Accident causation or prevention?

It was daytime. Sequential turn signal and brake lights all LED but not as bright as the Lasfit LEDs. The target fixation was likely the teen drivers phone.
