The Ford engineers would probably decide to put it in braille on the tailgate so they would know if they were getting backed over or hit front on!

Yes, the hybrids have an artificial sound. It is mentioned in the manual. I believe Our 2022 Hinda CR-V EX-L CVT has an artificial growl at low speed. It is annoying.

Now I’m wondering if we can change the sound to like Knight Rider for example
Personally, I'm torn between the flying saucer from Space Invaders and the main phasor bank from the Enterprise . . .

I love to be able to turn on a Jetson spaceship sound, when I felt like it.
Maybe when coasting around parking lots.
Or just automatically below 15 mph.

Yes. Electric motors are essentially silent. EVs and hybrid vehicles running in electric mode are required to emit some kind of sound to make pedestrians (especially blind pedestrians) aware that a vehicle is in motion nearby.
It is not a truism that electric motors are essentially silent, while it is true that electric motors can be manufactured to be near silent, with a lot of time, effort and expense put into them, similar to how a maybach is much quieter than a Mercedes or a Rolls-Royce is much quieter than a BMW.

if you build electric motors for high power output, light weight and high rpm operation, they can be deafeningly loud. But virtually no one wants to listen to that. So they make compromises to get the NVH down.

The point is not to make sound.

The point is to make a recognizable sound.

Toy, spaceship, train, or barking dog sound does not meet the design criteria.

People need to recognize it is a car or truck (and I suppose electric motocycle) they are hearing.

The existence if the sound and the nature of the sound is mandated by federal law as of a certain date, so early hybrids were allowed to be silent, but anything newer cannot be silent.

In sport mode, our 25 hybrid has artificial RPM/shifting noise and it has a chime when in reverse. Bit rediculous, really, but it is what it is. Sport mode revving makes me chuckle.
Actually there is a change in engine RPM. At least in pre-25MY, can't imagine they changed it much.

If you look at scanner/ log files, compared to normal driving with eCVT where the RPM will stay in very narrow range as long as your request for power is about the same - the Sport mode actually does vary as speed increases.

So just like a normal transmission the RPM will increase up to a point while the gearing doesn't do it's normal change (generator motor rpm matching ratio), then it "shifts" by the RPM going down and the generator motor changing the gearing, until the next increase in RPM.

Now - since the traction motor is used a whole lot more in Sport mode, and that could be pretty quiet compared to the engine - there may be some matching audio, but I find the engine pretty loud, and was watching the data more (than I probably should have).

Wow.

Hmmm - 1 pedal driving or brake pedal?

Not sure if underlined segment below is what they are thinking.
And from other examples in the manual, I could totally believe Ford meant the low speed noise and not merely noise from the motors - they just don't care to explain it well.

I included the whole section since there are frequently questions on the other info too.

HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE INFORMATION

A hybrid vehicle has an electric motor and a high voltage battery combined with a gasoline engine. The hybrid vehicle combines electric and gasoline propulsion to provide optimal performance and improved efficiency.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle Driving Characteristics
The gasoline engine starts and stops to provide power when required and to save fuel when not needed. When coasting at low speeds, coming to a stop or standing, the gas engine normally shuts down and your vehicle operates in electric-only mode.
Conditions that may cause the gasoline engine to start or remain running include:
  • Considerable vehicle acceleration.
  • Driving uphill.
  • The high voltage battery charge level is low.
  • Heating or cooling the vehicle interior in high or low outside temperatures.
  • The gasoline engine is below normal operating temperature.
  • Towing a trailer.
  • Certain selectable drive modes could cause the engine to run. See Selecting a Drive Mode.
Your hybrid vehicle also comes with standard hydraulic braking and regenerative braking. Regenerative braking is performed by your transmission and captures brake energy and stores it in the high voltage battery.
You could also notice that your engine continues to run instead of shutting off during extended downhill driving. The engine stays on during this engine braking but is not using any fuel.
You could also hear a slight whine or whistle when operating your vehicle. This is the normal operation of the electric motor in the hybrid system.
Note: Having your engine running is not always an indication of inefficiency. In some cases, it is actually more efficient than driving in electric mode.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle Indicators
Ford Maverick Is the Maverick hybrid sound artificial? {filename}
When you start your vehicle, a green READY indicator light appears in the instrument cluster letting you know that your vehicle is ready for driving.
The engine may not start because your vehicle has a silent key start feature. This fuel saving feature allows your vehicle to be ready to drive without requiring the gas engine to be running.
The indicator remains on when your vehicle is on, whether the engine is running or not, to indicate your vehicle is capable of movement using the electric motor, gas engine or both.
Typically, the engine does not start unless the vehicle is cold, a climate control change is requested or you press the accelerator pedal.

It illuminates if your vehicle has an electrical component fault or failure that causes your vehicle to shutdown or enter a limited operating mode. A message may appear in the instrument cluster display.

Stop Safely NowDisplays when a malfunction occurs in the high voltage electric system. Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. Have your vehicle checked as soon as possible.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle Information – Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if the vehicle runs out of fuel and the high voltage battery is out of charge?
  • Refuel and start your vehicle normally. The engine will recharge the high voltage battery.
Why does the engine sometimes start at key-on?
  • The vehicle's computer determines if an engine start is required at key-on. It starts the engine when necessary for cabin heating, windshield defrost, if the high voltage battery is low, or if the outside temperature is low.
Can I put E15 or E85 in my vehicle, and how will it affect my fuel economy?
  • Your hybrid vehicle can use E15 (15% ethanol, 85% gasoline) fuel, but you may notice slightly reduced fuel economy because ethanol contains less energy per gallon than gasoline. Your hybrid vehicle is not designed to use E85 (85% ethanol).
Why does it take a long time before the engine shuts down?
  • There are several reasons the engine stays on for an extended amount of time when you first start it. One common reason is to make sure that the emissions components are warm enough to minimize tailpipe emission. As the climate gets cooler, the engine-on time is extended.
Why does my engine stay on when it is extremely cold outside?
  • In order to make sure that the climate control system can begin heating the cabin or defrosting the windshield as soon as a driver requests it, the engine coolant temperature has to be kept sufficiently hot. Keeping the engine on is required to maintain the correct coolant temperature.

The lack of details in this response made me wonder what the details are. So here’s the details:

49 CFR 571.141: EV’s and hybrids, including cars, MPV’s, trucks and low speed vehicles with gvwr 10,000 lbs or less must emit a 1/3 octave bandwidth tone having frequencies ranging from 315 to 5,000 hz. Minimum SPL is 44 dB when system is activated and stationary, as well as up to 10 kph. 10-20 kph is 51 dB minimum. 20-29 kph is 57 db. 30+ kph (18.75 mph) is 62 db. Reverse gear is a minimum of 48 db. Sound tonal quality is specified in details such as specifying two non adjacent 1/3 octave bands with minimum band spl and minimum summed spl. Also, spl must increase / decrease to denote acceleration / deceleration. Phase-in schedule required 50% of a manufacturer’s vehicle to meet requirement starting 3/1/2020 and 100% of vehicles had to meet Requirement by 3/1/2021.
