hybrid mpg issue

I have owned my 2022 XLT Maverick hybrid for about 5 weeks now and am still learning how to use all the options, settings, etc. For the first approximately 3 weeks my overall mileage was in the high 30s mpg, about what I would have expected given the estimated numbers given for city/highway expected mpg. Keep in mind that I have been fiddling with all the options, settings, etc to try to learn. Suddenly the number dropped to the middle 20s. I thought maybe the drive mode had been eco but I switched it accidentally to normal. So I set it to eco and drove around for a while and it started started looking like more in the middle-high 30s. So I decided to leave it on eco. Problem was that the next time I started the truck it was apparently back to normal. But if being in eco for three weeks was the right reason for the drop, why didn't it revert to normal the second time I drove it?

It will revert back to normal every time you start it. You have to switch to eco ever time if that's the mode you want to use.

It doesn't stay in the last drive mode you used. Every time you start it, it is in normal.

Was it extra hot when the mpg dropped? A/C will have an impact on the mileage.

I am in the Northeast, so it typically isn't hot enough for me to see a large MPG drop in the summer. But if we have extended times of temps in the 90s I will notice a small drop.

I average about 40mpg now. In the winter it will be closer to 30.

That doesn't make sense at all. Pretty much everytime that someone has brought up eco mode the consensus is only a 2-3MPG difference and like has been said the truck would revert to normal mode each time you restarted it. I would look for other things, driving type, long idle times, extreme heat, however none of these alone should make a 10-12 mpg difference. Perhaps an update???
No error codes? Hate to suggest a trip to the dealer as most seem to know less than some on here.

Are your quoted numbers individual trips or filling up the tank and measuring the MPG manually?

Since you mention 5 weeks I expect that you are referencing individual trips.

Individual trips can have infinite MPG numbers if the trip was short was on all electric.

I can get infinite MPG numbers on trips that are 0.3 miles from a Taco Bell to across the street to a Tom Thumb. It is unrealistic to expect these types of MPG numbers as many trips will use the ICE engine.

I have also got MPG numbers in the low 20's or high teens which are also normal because these trips are short, the AC is running and the ICE engine needs to recharge the HV Battery because it is low on charge.

MPG's will very trip to trip and are normal.

On your first fill-up note the gallons used and divide the miles you put on by the gallons that will give you the overall MPGs.

I just left the TRIP running for the first 3 weeks, so I presume it was cumulative. Then noticed that it was slowly decreasing so I started a new TRIP and the mpg ran steadily in the 20s. Your comments are very helpful and I think I just need to stop worrying about it.

Yes, it certainly can. If you are in the 100s and need lots of A/C it can. It will use of some of the battery that would normally go to assisting the ICE.

Agree. I was averaging 43 in April/May. I live in the desert so AC IS AMUST. Saw it drop to 36/37

I don't pay much attention to the dash MPG indicator -- a lot of factors can cause that to jump around. Only data that interests me are fill-up numbers. I've had my Maverick for just over a week. Drove it back from Florida to Massachusetts -- 1600 miles. First half of trip was under break-in rules, i.e., 65 MPH or less, no heavy braking. The last 500 miles I would go as far as 80 MPH. My actual mileage for the full trip was 38.5 MPG, and I can live with that. In a couple of weeks I will fill up again and get a first read on 'mixed' driving.

Except for that gear dial thingy, I love this truck.
