So my 2023 XLT Hybrid has a battery drain issue. In only 7 weeks of ownership / 2,000 miles I've had numerous "deep sleep" notifications and 2 completely dead batteries which required a jump (I used my NOCO GB40 - but have since upgraded to the Hulkman 8.5) to get started. My truck is currently AT the dealership for the 2nd time because the technician wanted to replace the Battery Control Module (I might have that term slightly wrong) because after they dropped in a new 12V last week, the problem still kept persisting and I was forced to bring my truck back to the service department.

Here are my ideas for 'solutions' to the parasitic drain, assuming the dealership is unable to 100% resolve the issue. I don't want to be negative, but it really appears that for MOST of the reports on here, despite numerous interventions by Ford, the issue is never quite resolved. Thus, I want to be proactive and perhaps mitigate the issue as best I can. The alternative is worse for me....getting rid of the Maverick and paying more / dealing with locating a new vehicle. I waited 17 months for this truck and I still LOVE it.

I'd love input or ideas, many of these quasi-solutions come from interactions and/or posts from members of this forum:

1) Upgrade my 12V battery by installing a 'beefier' alternative to the factory Motorcraft - that will still fit the under-seat dimensions
  • Duralast Gold Battery T4-DLG Group Size 99 470 CCA ($220)
2) Purchase a Direct Mount battery maintainer to leave under the hood
  • Noco Genius2D ($40)
3) Get myself a traditional, plug-in battery maintainer for parking in front of my house
  • Noco Genius 5 ($70)
4) Buy a 12V Solar Trickle/Maintainer for any camping trips or long weekends out in nature
  • Eco-Worthy 10W Solar Panel ($40)
5) Continue to carry with my Hulkman 2000A Battery Jumper as back-up
  • Hulkman 8.5 2000A boost pack ($125)

I understand that a brand new vehicle should NOT require this much pre-caution, but, I would still rather try to enjoy this truck to its fullest potential. Perhaps THIS time my dealership will solve the problem, I would love to be proven wrong. I still carry a voltage meter and will continue to monitor this issue.

I am not not married to any of these particular brands or models, but from my research ....it seems that all of these would provide a possible safety net to hopefully keep the parasitic drain problem at bay. I would love any input or suggestions before I go and make these purchases.

Other hacks that I have been trying with (unfortunately) no success.
  1. Did a BMS reset (high beams + brakes) after getting a new 12V battery from Ford
  2. Park far from my house to prevent my truck and key fob from "talking" to one another
  3. Keep my key inside a faraday bag to prevent any possible signal chat
  4. Turned off / Unpaired all FordPass data from within my truck screen settings
  5. Driving in "Low" mode for the last 5-10 minutes of every drive

This is my post on here about this somewhere, a good maintainer is all you need.

Thanks for the input. A traditional battery maintainer was/is my first choice for solution. I don't have a garage to park in, but I do have an outlet a few feet from where I park outside of my house.

Do you plug this in frequently? I'm wondering if it's better to do as a regular (nightly) precaution just to be safe?

Everyday it’s a smart charger you can leave it plugged in for months and won’t hurt the battery . I have 3 cars so not my daily, I’ve al so installed these for Honda owners cause they have the same issues. Just buy the extra long cable

One additional hack to add to your list:

6. Get the dealership to do the Grabby Brakes TSB 23-2060 done as that TSB updates the BMS module that controls 12V battery charging.

Then do #1 hack as who knows if the tech did that after updating the BMS module
  1. Did a BMS reset (high beams + brakes) after getting a new 12V battery from Ford

The grabby brakes TSB does not reprogram the BMS but rather the BECM - the battery energy control module - which is the controller integral to the high voltage battery, not the 12V system.

Did you delete the ford pass app from your phone. That seems to have made mine go much longer between deep sleep modes. And I haven't had another no start since. I turned off all communication between the truck and my phone then deleted the app. I have suspected that the modem may be playing a big part in the drain. Especially if you have a weak signal at your house like I do.

Howdy, the Duralast battery or the Diehard flavor I installed in my 'Hybrid Battery Replacement" thread are not really 'beefier', they are same physical size, same vent, and same specs as the OEM Motorcraft battery, and they are all T4 batteries.

I've had a number of Motorcraft batteries in the last few years that failed very early and I question whether the replacement your dealer used was any better, or whether they charged it prior to installation. That's why I chose a Diehard with a fresh build date in order to rule 'Motorcraft battery' out of my equation. And mine has been problem free for ~7 weeks now after going into Deep Sleep every ~3 days for 6-7 months and me charging the battery each time.

Your problem may be different from mine, although I experienced ~2 dozen Deep Sleep issues with no interior lights, etc. and charged overnight each time, my truck never failed to start.

I'd also be curious of the manufacture date on your 'new' replacement battery..

Good luck!!

.

Should you not want to get the replacement battery with the longest reserve capacity and not focus on the cold cranking capacity. The reserve capacity is amount of current it can supply until it drops to 10.5 volts?

Also check the noco 5 genius, I don't have book around right now but if I remember correctly the 12v hybrid battery is slightly over it's max recommended capacity and depending on SOC of 12v along with ambient temp it could take more than overnight to top battery off. The noco 10 amp genius can charge much larger batteries and hybrid battery faster when temps permit and also has more brains along with repair cycle. Do not know if this option can be ran with battery connected in vehicle but will handle desulfation, etc. It is about $100 with coupon. I charged a flat Honda CR-V battery (larger don't remember it's amp hours) with my 5amp genius and it took several days.

I would love to know more about the benefits of Noco Genius 10 vs Genius 5. I have no issue spending the extra money if it means it could help me out.

Is it correct to assume that bigger is better with a battery maintainer? My thinking is that if for most nights of the week I have to hook this up under the hood of my truck it will prevent me from ever reaching 'deep sleep' and/or dropping to the point of needing a jump.

Bigger is not necessarily better as with a smart charger the output will be adjusted down to properly float charge the last 10-15%. I have not recorded the overnight drain on 12v but at a temp of around 45-50°F my battery loses about 0.1v so that would reduce the amount of current available to go into battery. (Is the drain constant or cyclical? and how is this seen by the chip in the noco?). The genius 5 should be able to handle the 12v in the Maverick with the main benefit of insuring 100% charge periodically. I will just feel more comfortable with the genius 10. The genius 5 does show a 120 minute capacity which I take to mean it will drop to float for a limited period for the windings to cool but have not confirmed this. It will charge the 12v it's just a question if how long it takes.

I have a question about the battery issue that is being discussed. Is this a random problem or a standard problem?
I am going out of town for a month and my truck will rarely if ever be driven during that time. Should I tell my wife to leave her car in the garage and use the maverick so this doesn’t happen to mine?
All of the issues everyone is writing about definitely does not make me feel warm and fuzzy.

It is a good idea for any Hybrid owner to start / run the vehicle for at least 5 minutes once a week.
