If the engine can’t run then you’re likely only getting a fraction up to like 1 mile out of the HVB at very low speed (if you have a full state of charge), it won’t deplete itself past like 50% it’s just a buffer in a way.

Also I wonder if the system simply won’t let you drive at all if the computer determines there is no gas able to be pumped for the ICE.
Okay who wants to be the first volunteer to try that "run out of gas" then drive electric to a gas station. 😊

I sure won't do that intentionally but murphy says that some unlucky Hybrid owner will run out of gas and hopefully post here if they could drive on electric only to a gas station.

Snowbird......Mileage to Alabama and beyond 800 MILE TANK
Maverick XLT CYBER ORANGE MOON ROOF LUXURY PKG TRIFOlD COVER 2.5L HYBRID FWD. Deliver 1/25/22

Absolute mileage....worked in quality 25 years collecting data.....left Mi 2° on 2-5-22 OD 587 mi. arrived Al 60° on 2-6-22 OD 1620 mi. 1033 mi highway 33.54 gal. = 30.79 MPG. Next fill up top off @ walmart in Gulf Shores on 2-22-22.......had to do a few laps in the parking lot to hit my target of 800 mi , warmer, gentle, local flat land driving, OD read 2420.2 Yieid was 46.81 MPG could not ask for more, most driving done inn eco mode for whatever that may mean.....Topping off the tank is a real pain nursing the tipoff for the last 2-3 gallons until it backs up and out of the tank fill tube......this is only way to get ABSOLUTE numbers......reading the gauge needle or indicated numbers on dash, or when the pump kicks off are ball park figures. Given an extended time frame of multiple fill ups on pump kicking off will allow the numbers to even out but you need to record all the data over a period of period time. Given the rising gas prices us hybrid owners could not be in a better position....I am 999% satisfied other than the speakers sound like a clock radio, but my hearing is getting bad anyway, sounds better when I have my hearing aids in, it is what it is !!!!!
Went cross-eyed trying to read that. Learn how to punctuate and to break paragraphs as your next challenge.

Math you say? I’m afraid I don’t speak latin
I was thinking binary; 1 + 1 = 0 and I can prove it. One new truck introduced by Ford + one order for new truck = zero new truck delivered.

You could hit over 1000 miles if you run a hose from a gas can down the fill neck.

After reading the OP I thought he might be the type that irons his underpants, but after reading your response, eh, maybe not.

So all the different pump manufactures all kick off @ the same level.......talk about uncontrolled variation.......when the tank is filled and will not take another drop on a constant basis there is no variation other than temp, driving habits, terrain, traffic conditions.....all my 800 miles where driven by me under same local conditions, what would you suggest for most accurate numbers?
2 ways to get the most accurate numbers, first use the setting on the handle that fills the tank the slowest, when it shuts off you are done! Full flow settings vary more from station to station. 2, if not traveling fill up at the same place & the same pump every time.

Another variable is the dispenser calibration. Dispensers can be off by 0.1 gallon or more, so these figures are more of an estimation than an exact number. In Pennsylvania, dispensers are randomly inspected for accuracy and if they are off( and short the consumer) by a certain amount(don't know the tolerance), then they have to be repaired and recalibrated within a certain time frame. Something to consider when calculating mpgs.

Ok. Perhaps run the tank to empty and fill it up with weighted jerry cans. But yes scales are next to gas pumps at a lot of truck stops. Didn’t realize the level of accuracy was so poor. Where is your genious idea?

I still thinks it’s silly but to each their own. The cost of stopping at a gas station 2 more times to get the same amount of gas is inconvenience enough for me.
I’m glad to see someone add the value of time. For my work, I drive a minimum of 45k miles per yr, and now I drive a MAV Hybrid. While driving my wife’s primary car, a MachE awd ext, I saw the potential cumulative time savings from less stops at a gas station, and then also applied this analysis with the Maverick Hybrid.

A time savings of one full day in a year using an EV with an L2 charger at home
I compared ours to a similarly powered and sized SUV like an Edge AWD at 21 miles per gallon, 18.5 gallon tank, at 10 minutes per gas station stop

(45,000 miles per year)/(21 mpg)/(15 gallons used between fill-ups per stop)*(10 minutes per stop)/(60 minutes per hour) = 23.8 hours per year savings !

For the Maverick Hybrid comparison, I choose... the Mav hybrid vs. the least thirsty Santa Cruz !

23 mpg for the SC. Assuming the same average odometer reading of 74 at the time of fill up with the Edge comparison, I applied the same odometer to range ratio for their respective fuel tank sizes. Based on this, the Mav's gas station fill-up interval is 11.8 gallons and the Santa Cruz's interval is every 14.5 gallons between fills. I compared those two numbers in the above formula.
<drumroll>

Drivers who drive 45,000 miles per year with a Maverick Hybrid save 5 hours and 19 minutes per year from less gas station fuel stops vs. the Santa Cruz !

Note: Some sites reference the average gas station stop to be 15 minutes. That makes it almost an 8 hour savings per year. Eight hours is like a really good night's rest. Maverick Hybrid owners can rest easier, with one extra free full night's rest per year.

Okay who wants to be the first volunteer to try that "run out of gas" then drive electric to a gas station.
The volunteer should carry a spare can of fuel, so that when the car dies (it can't EV to the station), you won't be calling AAA. C-Max owners went a little nuts seeing how far they could go.... until ptjones made 900 miles.
save 5 hours and 19 minutes per year from less gas station fuel stops
+1 One reason I pay extra for ethanol-free...

You should not do this with a Hybrid!
The fuel tank is under pressure, and you could actually destroy your vehicle from fire. Check the owner's manual, there is a warning about topping off the fuel tank on a hybrid model!

On Page 176 of the (PDF) 2022 Maverick Owner's Manual:

⚠ WARNING: Stop refueling when the fuel pump nozzle automatically shuts off for the first time. Failure to follow this will fill the expansion space in the fuel tank and could lead to fuel overflowing.
⚠ WARNING: Do not overfill the fuel tank. The pressure in an overfilled tank may cause leakage and lead to fuel spray and fire.
Not to mention you will fill your evaporative emission lines with liquid fuel, destroying the leak detection pump, vapor canister and purge solenoid in the process. Be prepared for a solid CEL.
