I still thinks it’s silly but to each their own. The cost of stopping at a gas station 2 more times to get the same amount of gas is inconvenience enough for me.
This is why I will bypass the line at Costco when it's ridiculous and fill up at the Arco instead. Yes, I save 20 cents a gallon at the Costco. But I have to wait half an hour to save it. I'm not wasting half an hour of my time to save $3.

My original reply was only meant to be facetious. But IMHO, the best "crunching numbers" method would be Root-Mean-Square (RMS) over a series of fill-ups, record values when the pump shuts off for the first time as your data points.
Which is why simply using Fuelly and tracking over time is ridiculously easy and does the work for you.

Once your account is setup you can literally text your fill up details, the acronym to remember what to send is even...MPG

All I do is text my miles, price and gallons to track - I can also add notes after those 3 details, so I typically also enter what the gauge read so I can compare. It also texts me back my current tank and overall mpg instantly. That avoids all this nonsense of overfilling - can one pump be different than another? Of course. Does it matter if you're looking to get an overall average over time? Not one bit.

The guy is just trying to figure out his fuel mileage as best he can, not calculating the fuel requirements to land on mars.

Fill up tank until it automatically shuts off
Reset trip odometer
Drive
Come back to same pump and refill until auto shut off
Divide odometer reading by amount of fuel dispensed by pump

Its not genius, its realistic, practical, and accurate enough.
That would have been my ideal solution. However, OP made it clear in his original post to top the tank off repeatedly as the only way to get an accurate assessment. Trying to provide an agreeably accurate method that doesn’t involve ruining the EVAP system.

“Topping off the tank is a real pain nursing the tipoff for the last 2-3 gallons until it backs up and out of the tank fill tube......this is only way to get ABSOLUTE numbers

I know, I know... But before there were Apps there was this thing called math... Which is of course how the Fuelly App works in the background. Only us "Old Folk" remember life before Apps did it all for us.

My brother asked a question which got me wondering....
If you run out of gas, can you drive the hybrid Mav until you get to the nearest gas station?
If the engine can’t run then you’re likely only getting a fraction up to like 1 mile out of the HVB at very low speed (if you have a full state of charge), it won’t deplete itself past like 50% it’s just a buffer in a way. Also I wonder if the system simply won’t let you drive at all if the computer determines there is no gas able to be pumped for the ICE.

And yet you're here, online, in a car forum - the wonders of the internet! Fuelly has been around a lot longer than apps or smart phones. That is why you can update it with a text, and not an app. You'll find apps that will update fuelly for you, but there is no official fuelly app.

Actually there is a Fuelly App in the App Store. But I get your point.

⚠ WARNING: Do not overfill the fuel tank. The pressure in an overfilled tank may cause leakage and lead to fuel spray and fire.
You're not really supposed to do it with any vehicle, as they have little filters that can get messed up. So that applies to Ecoboost too.

Speaking of fuel spray, this has actually happened to me and I was so embarrassed. So this was on a old Impala SS I was borrowing, a 95, and the tank was practically bone dry, and I filled it up normal and did not click twice, yet when I pulled out the fuel filler apparently it had made such a tight seal that it compressed the air in the tank when filled with fuel so gasoline just started gushing out, lol!

I would imagine that you could as long as your battery will push out energy and you're below 40 mph (?). I seen folks posting about 1-3 miles on electric only so it should be possible.

Speaking from another Quality Control professional perspective. Walter Shewhart (Father of Statistical Process Control - SPC) would disagree with your analysis for you induced uncontrolled variation into the process. The amount of extra fuel (top-off) put into the system after shut-off has skewed the final results. Therefore your control limits are out-of-control.
...Man that was some geeky Quality Engineer speak, even for me...

here is a good article about a Ford Kuga in Europe. If a plug in can’t go, the Maverick won’t be able to.
