So far 10 2x6 10 ft. deck boards and one 2x12 by 10 ft. Tied down with heavy cord. Tailgate down, little red flag.

It would be nice to know the strength of the tailgate cables and attach points. I broke a set many years ago hauling 2X8X16s in my f-250

I bought 12 2x4x 8’, I stacked them six on six and had 2x2x 54-1/4” that I laid on top at the front of the load and slipped it into the Fits bed pocket, then put three screws thru it into the two outer top 2x4 and the center one. This prevents them from sliding backwards then used a ratchet strap on the rear, with the tailgate in the half-up position worked slick.

When strapping down lumber I use an appropriate number of high-quality ratchet straps.

When strapping a queen mattress to the top of my car I do what most people do and just use one small piece of kite string... but it's all good because I stick my hand out the window while driving and hold it down.

:ROFLMAO:

.
In the 1970's in my home town a guy killed his buddy who was riding in the pickups bed "to hold the mattress down" when he got up to speed on the interstate.

The steel tubing in this photo is about 12' long. My approach is arguably not for the faint of heart, but I could carry 10' pipe inside my foxbody Mustang and close the hatch so I needed the Maverick to be an upgrade! I built an aluminum folding ladder rack that attaches to a set of Elevate rails and uses hitch pins. I can fold the rack down (for less wind resistance) or remove it entirely (for full bed access) in a few minutes with no tools. It was a lot of work to build but now I get "world's ONLY" bragging rights. LOL

A youtube channel that I sometimes watch has a lot of good knotwork. Here is one of his videos on an easy to do and undo tie down hitch for securing loads in a pickup truck:

Something oddly satisfying watching someone good with knots.... that guy is super smooth. I would've fumbled around trying that about six times before getting it right....

Is it recommended for folks with the XL to purchase more tie downs or do the four that are there cover most situations for hauling lumber?

also, any recommendations for ratchet straps? just get something at HF?
