thanks Andy. I typically tow 3,000 lbs on a twice weekly basis.
I had previously used a RWD 2020 Ranger (lowered to facilitate ingress/egress with a bad hip), but was never happy with its towing capability, especially with a 16’ two axle box trailer.

My current 2025 AWD Hybrid Lariat with 4k tow package seems to handle my smaller trailers very well, even after lowering the whole truck a couple of inches and installing a stiffer sway bar.

I’m becoming happier and happier with my ‘25 Lariat, after initial reservations once picking it up in mid January. The sway bar and springs from good-win-racing.com turned the Maverick into a handler, with no body roll using the medium setting.

This all said, numbers are engineers and accountants passion and hobbies. My satisfaction comes from: “if it works, it’s good” and continue on.

Tongue Weight does not impact GCWR, it only impacts Payload you can carry in the Truck (which includes passengers). The equation is GCWR = Kerb Weight + Payload (Truck) + Trailer + Payload (Trailer). Think of a stationary empty Truck and empty Trailer. Then GCW = Kerb Weight + Trailer. The Trailer exerts a downward force on the Truck which is like adding Payload, but does not impact the total combined weight.

When vehicle manufactures publish tow ratings they are using the J2807 Standard. This is a rigorous set of criteria that a vehicle towing a trailer is subject to (such as climbing a steep gradient in 40 C weather as well as emergency braking).

Here is a summary of J2807:

SAE J2807 - Wikipedia

I always say just use common sense; but now I realise only a quarter of the population has any. In other words, 3/4 of drivers are idiots.
And at least 1/3rd of those are Blithering.

Now that is interesting, what you have done to make your Lariat fit your needs.

My 2 threads "so you want to tow a trailer, eh?" Thread and this one are aimed at providing info, to some who dearly need it but don't know it, and those who want to get an idea on how to tow without learning it the hard way.

Quick story, I had my travel trailer, F150 w/Anderson WDH w/designed in anti-sway) heading north for the weekend...another truck with a heavy old travel trailer (no WDH and a need for speed/being in front) go into a "tail wagging the dog"scenario while passing me...not terrible, I imagine he didn't have his hitch weight adjusted properly.

We all got out of it okay, but he did decide to slow down till his turn off. You can't unlearn that, if you recognized what just happened! And here we are...

I understand getting a truck at the right height for comfortable ingress/egress. Stock is perfect for me, my back and knees...just turn and slide in and out.

There are lots of other threads on things that have no importance or interest to me but I will still have a look at lots, just in case I can learn something...and it works!

Cheers and tow safe,

(Thanks for contributing your thoughts as well as what you have done to perfect your Lariat for you!).
